Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. I want to start by saying there's no question that Canadians love hockey. It's something we've always been proud of as Canadians, but over the last few months, I've seen more anger, disappointment and people who are just ashamed of what's been going on.

Canadian Heritage committee  Do you think there's a crisis in hockey right now? Does your organization have a crisis?

Canadian Heritage committee  Then there's no crisis?

Canadian Heritage committee  Do you know who the Scarborough Sharks, Leaside Wildcats and the Etobicoke Dolphins are?

Canadian Heritage committee  They're local teams right around the corner from where I represent. They're teams made up of young women. I would consider them shareholders in your organization. Would you agree?

Canadian Heritage committee  If I give you just 30 seconds to explain why Hockey Canada and the organizations representing hockey have failed young women like them, what would you say?

Canadian Heritage committee  Let's talk about culture within your organization. You have an action plan that's going to change the culture within your sport. It says here in the plan overview—this is like one of the first statements made in the plan—“Hockey Canada is committed to driving cultural change and addressing the toxic behaviour that exists in corners of the game.”

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. At the end of March, you acknowledged that there was a crisis in sports in this country. At the end of the day, we're all here to ensure that we create an environment that allows young people to excel in sport. If you go to any hockey arena or soccer field and watch young men and women play sports, you can see there is definitely a disconnect between what they're feeling and the complexities that we can build within systems.

Canadian Heritage committee  Minister, I want to start by saying thank you for your testimony today and for the acknowledgement of the crisis in sport across this country and the issues. In addition to sexual violence, there are issues around racism and equity, but we also know there are issues around mental health in sport.
