Human Resources committee  Since September 2020, Service Canada has paid over 4.4 million beneficiaries a total of $56 billion in EI benefits. Despite these record volumes, 88% of applicants have been paid within the four-week, or 28-day, service standard. Furthermore, the capacity of the EI call centre has nearly tripled, from approximately 1,100 officers prior to the pandemic to nearly 3,000 officers by the end of March 2021.

Public Accounts committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. The current estimate, as the deputy said, of $56 billion to $60 billion does not include an amount for provincial or federal taxes. Through agreements between the provinces, and because the federal tax would return to the federal government in any case, those tax amounts are not included.

House debate  The Canadian agriculture sector, in particular, relies on exporting its commodities. Every year, our country exports $56 billion in agriculture and agri-food products. Transportation by water is an essential factor in getting those products to market. Over 90% of Canada's farmers are dependent on exports, with one in every two jobs in crop production depending on exports.

Government Operations committee  The most recent estimates from National Defence, putting the costs at about $56 billion to $60 billion, are from 2017. You might think that these estimates are a bit out of date, but a few days ago, National Defence reaffirmed that it's certain that the estimated costs of $56 billion to $60 billion from four years ago are still valid today.

Government Operations committee  A few days or weeks ago in anticipation or right after our report was tabled, they said that they still stand by that $56 billion to $60 billion for the 15 ships. My bet is that they will probably update it in a couple of months when it's probably less politically charged, but so far they stand by that estimate.

Human Resources committee  So these programs are working and complementing each other. With the addition of the rapid housing initiative, we are now at $56 billion as part of the national housing strategy. A lot of work has been done. Of course, there is more work to be done as well.

Housing  Our first-time home equity purchase program, which supports first-time buyers getting into the market, is part of the way in which we are supporting the industry and making sure Canadians have access to affordable housing, whether it is through ownership or on the rental side. The rental housing initiative, part of the $56-billion national housing strategy, also assists Canadians in finding a home. We have also launched the Canada housing benefit, which in Ontario is the Canada-Ontario housing benefit, to support housing needs through rent supplements, and that can also go toward low-income home ownership.

Housing  Madam Speaker, since this government took office in 2015, we have been consistently stepping up and making substantial investments in providing housing to Canadians from coast to coast to coast. A $56-billion national housing strategy is just part of that. Additionally, reaching home, for example, the program that serves front-line housing work in this country, has been increased to almost $1 billion this year.

Agriculture committee  In 2017, Canada produced $110 billion in agriculture and agri-food products and exported $56 billion. It would be hard to argue that Canadian BRM programs have hindered the competitive position of Canadian farmers. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the average farm household has significantly greater income than the average non-farm household and four times greater assets.

Business of Supply  It is one of the most common reasons that people seek health care in Canada. The economic impact of chronic pain on this country is estimated to be $56 billion a year. In 2019, the government established the Canadian pain task force, which is tasked with better defining the causes of chronic pain and providing recommendations to Health Canada with respect to prevention and management.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  There are three significant benefits for Canadians that come directly from the federal government: benefits for elderly people, which is about $56 billion; benefits for families with children, which is about $24 billion, and I touched on that in my speech; and then unemployment benefits, which is about $20 billion. That program is continually monitored and adjusted according to whether unemployment is up or down in a particular area.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  There are revenues from taxes that come in and then the first set of lines indicate the benefit amounts that go back to Canadians. The first line in that set of lines shows that $56 billion will go to elderly benefits, the second line shows that about $20 billion will be returned to Canadians in the form of employment insurance and the third line shows that $24 billion will go to the Canada child benefit.

Business of Supply  She also forgot to mention that during nine of the 10 years that the Harper government was in power, that government ran significant deficits. One of these deficits was among the largest in modern Canadian history. It was $56 billion for a single year. The Conservatives added $150 billion to the deficit during this period. The Canada child benefit is having a positive impact on our families and has helped thousands of children out of poverty, so why did she and her party vote against this important measure introduced by our government?

Finance committee  The results have been dramatic. Global upstream oil and gas investment is expected to increase by $56 billion, or 6%, in 2018. The U.S. alone will see an increase of about 15%. In contrast, Canadian oil and gas investment is expected to decrease from $45 billion down to $43 billion. For oil sands, investment is expected to decrease for the fourth consecutive year.
