Finance committee  My point remains the same: On this food table, you will not be able to do year over year comparisons. This is in striking contrast to your counterparts in the United States and other countries, where they've actually kept the two tables going. They've got the new one, which rightfully reflects perhaps the more modern examples of diet, but they enable you to also continue to track on the old one.

Finance committee  Okay, I'll move on to a different topic here. You said earlier, in response to my colleague's questions, that deficits lead to inflation. Would you care to expand on that?

Finance committee  You said earlier in response to Mr. Fast's question that the increased deficit spending was creating inflation. You said it put more money into Canadians' pockets and therefore they spent more, which created more inflation. You had more money chasing fewer goods, which was creating inflation.

Finance committee  More money chasing fewer goods equals higher inflation. That's been the case in the five worst cases of inflation: There was higher deficit spending, which creates more money chasing fewer goods, which creates inflation. One other thing that you added, with respect, was that taxes are inflationary as well.

Finance committee  Perfect. Thank you very much for your testimony and for helping people across the world. We appreciate that. Ms. Durdin, perhaps I will finish off with you. I think you were put in a very difficult situation, and I think many of your credit unions were. The actual emergency measures act says that accounts could be frozen for any “designated” person.

Finance committee  Thank you very much. I'll start with you, Mr. Volpe. I was struck by some of your early testimony, where you stated that the vaccine mandate for truckers was causing some challenges. The reason is that I was just in Peterborough at a factory, and they stated to me that their cost of shipping had increased by five times.

Finance committee  Thank you for that, Mr. Volpe. We did see a sizable increase in the cost due to the trucker mandate. Thank you for that. I want to now turn briefly to GoFundMe and give you an opportunity to clarify the following. With respect, I think one of my colleagues was a little bit irresponsible in speculating about a Russian government connection.

Finance committee  That's perfect. For you, Mr. Walper, this is somewhat related. It might have been you or Mr. Wiley who talked about Switzerland as being successful. Do you feel that your industry has a strong connection to the government? By that I mean if, in fact, there are regulatory changes that are needed and required, do you feel that your industry has a strong connection so that we can get that done?

Finance committee  For a quick clarification, you meant small “c” conservative?

Mr. Wiley, I want to go back to the initial discussion you had with Mr. Chambers about the information gathered as part of this. Could you possibly speak not just about your organization but also about what you might think about other organizations?

Finance committee  That's terrific. Thank you very much for that. I'm going to switch gears and go to Mr. Tremblay for a second. I would suspect that at least some of your members would have clients who are tourists and international.... I'm wondering if you could comment on whether it would have a positive impact on your members if in fact the government were to ease or just eliminate federal restrictions, both interprovincially and internationally.

Finance committee  Perfect. You captured it well. I wanted to catch up on that. I will get back to you, Mr. Walper, I promise, but that captured it well. Any one of the three witnesses can feel free to respond to this. What I'm hearing loud and clear is that you're not averse to regulation. What you don't want—maybe I'm putting words in your mouth, and feel free to correct me—is an ad hoc knee-jerk regulation, a little bit like what we saw with the invocation of the emergency measures act.
