Natural Resources committee  Without every province in this country having the capacity within itself to invest in its own territory.... This is something I think we've had a discussion about. Dr. MacDonald, I found your presentation on the socio-economic impacts of the recent diamond mine development in the Northwest Territories very accurate and very complete. With respect to the regulatory system, we did a research paper that looked at what people in the Northwest Territories said about the regulatory system.

Natural Resources committee  At the same time, the federal government has embarked upon their own process of regulatory reform that—as you can see after listening to Dr. MacDonald—has had a strong response from a lot of the aboriginal governments. We're going to have to balance out the approach going forward, but for us, the key is devolution. In terms of resource development, we are challenged by some significant factors.

Natural Resources committee  Thank you. I'd like to acknowledge the aboriginal custodians and owners of the land where we speak today. Thank you for asking me to present to you today. I am honoured to do so. In looking at this question that the committee is facing on resource extraction, the question I ask is, how can we extract minerals and metals in a way that supports a strong and independent north?

Natural Resources committee  Alberta, after being persuaded by the wonderful departed and greatly missed Dr. Martha Kostuch, initiated a two-year very intensive review of the oil sands industry. It included the federal government, and it was completed, I believe, in about 2006. This natural resources committee did a review of the oil sands industry in, I believe, 2007.

Fisheries committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Welcome, Mr. MacDonald and Dr. Dill. We appreciate the information you've provided so far. Let me start with Mr. MacDonald and then move on to Dr. Dill. I think you mentioned, or you certainly gave the impression, that the aquaculture companies were fighting “tooth and nail”--I think those are the words you used--the prospect of going to some kind of closed containment.

House debate  And those undertaking the liberation procedure must be sufficiently trained and practised, like Dr. MacDonald, to ensure the best results for the patient. Patients must then be followed for efficacy, improvements in quality of life, and side effects. Based on the evidence, the fact that more trials are about to begin in the States, that Saskatchewan is setting aside funds for clinical trials and that neurologists admit their patients get better, will the government do the right thing and support clinical trials for MS patients here in Canada?

Procedure and House Affairs committee  I begin by saying that prorogation is not a dirty word. Prorogation is a necessary and useful tool for ending a session of Parliament and beginning a new one between general elections. Then I go on to a section of what prorogation is. I make the distinction between prorogation and adjournment, because I think that's often confused and misunderstood.

Multiple Sclerosis  Over 1,500 liberation procedures have been performed worldwide, with researchers from Bulgaria, Italy, Kuwait and the United States showing similar results, namely that 87% to 90% of MS patients show venous abnormality. Of the 400 cases reviewed by Canada's Dr. MacDonald, 90% show a venous problem and, of the 381 patients angioplastied, the gold standard, by Dr. Simka in Poland, 97% show a problem. We need evidence-based medicine in Canada. Again, I call on the government to collect the evidence through clinical trials and a registry.
