Canada—United Kingdom Trade Continuity Agreement Implementation Act  Madam Speaker, tonight we are debating Bill C-18, which is the continuity agreement of the relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom. It is always a privilege to bring a voice from the people of Kings—Hants to Parliament, but this agreement in particular is important to Nova Scotia.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I think we can all appreciate the importance of the maple industry, in Quebec in particular. However, I am not familiar with the circumstances the member is raising. He certainly has access to the Minister of Finance. We sit on the public accounts committee together.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, what is important to note is that throughout this entire process, when we look at the measures we have put in place, including some of the ones the member and his party have criticized, we have always gone through the parliamentary process to have spending measures approved.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I appreciate the member opposite for bringing forward this particular concern. Since day one, our government has been building these programs to meet the needs of Canadians across the country. Have there been issues with particular business circumstances? Of course there have been.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, it is always a privilege to rise in the House, even if it is virtually, to bring remarks on behalf of the good people of Kings—Hants. I will be splitting my time today with my hon. colleague from Vaughan—Woodbridge. It is a privilege to speak to the opposition motion brought forward from the member of Parliament for Abbotsford.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, when I go back and look at the text of the motion, it talks about tourism-related businesses, it talks about the aviation sector and it talks about small business. If I had more time, I could certainly rhyme off things like the wage subsidy supporting five million people and CERB supporting nine million Canadians at the height of this program along with the emergency business account.

Groundhog Day  Mr. Speaker, today, February 2, is Groundhog Day, when our furry friends across North America give us their prediction on whether we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter. As the folklore goes, if the groundhog does not see its shadow, we can expect to have an early spring.

Order of Canada  Mr. Speaker, today I rise in the House to recognize the appointment of one of my constituents, Ray Ivany, to the Order of Canada. The former president of Acadia University in Kings—Hants and Cape Breton native began his academic career as a faculty member at Cape Breton University, where he subsequently served as executive vice-president.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Madam Speaker, the member is asking me, as a member of the governing caucus but not cabinet, for a commitment from government; this is asking in the wrong place. I will steer him to our ministers and our cabinet on the best approach. I would certainly agree with the member that students in Quebec are well organized.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Madam Speaker, I would agree with my colleague opposite that skills training writ large for individuals, whether they have disabilities or have been impacted by the pandemic and are searching for work, is important. I believe our government is focused on this. This is something we are delivering.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Madam Speaker, the member started by talking about the fact that families had lost income and that the Canada child benefit was beneficial. She then seemed to make the parallel that the economy will return back to normal, that all we have do is seal up the borders and get some more PPE, and then everything will be back to normal.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Madam Speaker, I will be splitting my time with my hon. colleague from Brampton East this morning. It is great to see the Speaker and all of our colleagues, despite this being in a virtual setting. It is the world we are living in right now. Today I have the privilege of speaking to Bill C-14.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Madam Speaker, my hon. colleague mentioned partisanship and ideology. Her speech was certainly filled with a lot of partisanship. I have a couple of different questions for her. She can choose which one she would like to answer. She mentioned some of the criticism of the government's response.

Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2020  Mr. Speaker, at the start of my hon. colleague's speech, he mentioned the former Bank of Canada governor talking about interest rates. As I understand it, the former governor of the Bank of Canada was more concerned about deflation and the impact on jobs. Certainly the member had talked a lot about the debt being at formerly $700 billion and now $1.1 trillion.

Health of Animals Act  Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the hon. member for Foothills for introducing Bill C-205 so that we can talk about it. I know that the bill was introduced to support biosecurity on Canadian farms and other establishments, which is a laudable objective. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that Canadian consumers are engaged consumers.
