Industry committee  We built that company because we were in the level of technology most of your customers or governments are in. It's just the level of technology that does that. We diversified our marketplace by quickly becoming an exporter. But we used to do the first system--we still do, I guess--by having it procured by the Canadian government.

Industry committee  Good afternoon. Thanks for the opportunity to talk to you. I'll tell you a little about Day4 Energy to begin with, and then make some other comments. We're in the business of manufacturing a new type of solar panel. It performs better and opens the door to new innovations in that field.

Canada-EFTA Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  Ninety per cent of world fish species have been removed from the oceans, particularly large fish species like tuna and shark. This is a catastrophe. Our oceans are dying. Dr. Sylvia Earle from Woods Hole in Massachusetts has done an excellent job of articulating this. She calls it the dying oceans. Why is the government not dealing with this catastrophe? I will give the House an example.

Industry committee  What does it take to focus not on what we don't have but what we need, and to build on the expertise that's already been so successful? Dr. Coulombe, I'd like you to answer that as well.

Brain Tumour Surveillance  I appreciated that so much. I was talking to somebody this morning who knows Dr. del Maestro. I was told that Dr. del Maestro just performs miracles for people who come in to see him with no hope. I want to thank the victims of brain tumours. We had hundreds of letters from victims.

Industry committee  Well, MacDonald Dettwiler is...sorry.

Industry committee  MacDonald Dettwiler is a space company primarily, and now a very valuable one because it's a knowledge-based company. It would be sad to lose it, but there is a marketplace that has to play a role here, so I wouldn't say that I would be all for interfering in every takeover that ever came around in Canada.

Industry committee  If Minister Prentice wanted my view, I'd try to give it, but I wouldn't claim to be an expert in this area. I have a view from the scientific perspective, but I am not a businessman, so I'm not sure that I'd be the best person to consult on that particular issue. If I were asked, what I would do is pull together a group of experts who were capable of putting together an analysis and assessment of the Canadian Space Agency's program, or the MacDonald Dettwiler situation.

Business of Supply  The Atlantic accord was a hard fought victory for Atlantic Canada. A lot of people carried a lot of weight. Dr. Hamm is to be commended on the work he did. The then minister, the member for Halifax West, the members from Newfoundland, all the Atlantic caucus worked with the government. We could not always get what we wanted.

Business of Supply  Premier Rodney MacDonald said that he was blindsided by the federal budget's attack on the accord. Is the member referring to Premier Danny Williams, a Progressive Conservative premier, as being dishonest when she said that he was arguing against her government's decision to axe the accord?

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  Over and over again we have heard the need for more community policing, but a lack of resources and not enough policemen to assign there. Also, from the young people at Macdonald Youth Services, I heard about the importance of programs: programs to rehabilitate, programs to support, and programs to keep young people out of the justice system. Last month I attended here in Ottawa when a Manitoba delegation, led by the Premier, met to discuss issues of crime and safety.

The Budget  I am very pleased to say that Halifax has joined patient wait time guarantees for this country. Just today, Premier MacDonald's government has committed to develop a guarantee in cancer radiation therapy. That is for all of Nova Scotia, but it was announced in Halifax. In doing so, Nova Scotia joins the province of Quebec, which has already committed to developing a guarantee for joint replacements and cataract surgeries.

Business of Supply  From my friends on this side we have heard about comments made on that day, November 4, that have backfired on Conservative MPs. We have heard the comments of Danny Williams. We have heard from Rodney MacDonald. We have heard from the premier of Saskatchewan. I am not going to give members a lot of quotes from other politicians. I want to give members some sense of what the media are saying in Nova Scotia, because they are very unbiased.

The Budget  In planning for the future, this budget looked to the history of this country to help us to achieve an infrastructure advantage. From Sir John A. Macdonald’s national railroad, to Louis St. Laurent’s St. Lawrence Seaway, to John Diefenbaker’s vision of the north, transportation and infrastructure have connected our great country. It united us and shaped who we are.
