Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015  Mr. Speaker, I have a quick two-part response. He mentioned that one of the arguments I had made was that we were taking measures that were similar to what our allies did. I was attempting to refute some of the criticisms of the bill. However, the most important thing to note is that we are trying to do what Canadians expect of us.

Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015  Mr. Speaker, I have, and I am sure many members in the House would have had much the same experience, had many conversations with constituents in my riding over the last number of weeks. Particularly over the last couple of weekends, I had the opportunity to speak to probably thousands of people in my riding at some of the major community events I attended.

Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015  Mr. Speaker, I noted that in the member's speech he referred to some witnesses whom he asserted were somehow blocked by the government. Putting it nicely, I do not think the facts would bear that out. Having been a member of the public safety committee previously, I know that generally the committee chooses its witnesses by having the parties prioritize their potential witnesses.

Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015  Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure to rise today in the House and underline how important it is that the anti-terrorism act, 2015 be adopted and that it be adopted as quickly as possible. Ensuring the safety of a country's citizens is, in fact, the first and foremost responsibility of any country and of any government.

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act  Mr. Speaker, I am thankful for this chance to speak today to Bill C-641. The bill provides us with an opportunity to reassure the House of our government's sincere desire to work co-operatively with willing partners to improve the well-being of aboriginal peoples across Canada. Our government's actions on this front demonstrate an impressive record of achievement.

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, I have spoken to thousands of hard-working parents in my riding about their child care choices and the cost of raising a family. They have expressed their strong support for our new family tax cut and enhanced universal child care benefit that will make every single family, including single parents, better off.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, today, in both official languages, the ninth report of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, in relation to Bill S-6, an act to amend the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act and the Nunavut Waters and Nunavut Surface Rights Tribunal Act.

Legion of Honour  Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate Mr. Peter Poohkey of Airdrie, Alberta, on receiving the French Légion d'honneur. The Légion d'honneur is France's highest honour, and it is being awarded to all living Canadian veterans of the second world war who participated in the D-Day landings and therefore contributed to the liberation of France.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, Canadians simply cannot understand why the worst of the worst violent offenders would ever be let out of prison. Thankfully, our government is listening. This is in sharp contrast to the opposition parties that promote and support policies like the Liberals' faint hope clause and oppose tougher sentencing regimes for murderers who also commit sexual assault and kidnapping.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I would like to follow up on some erroneous comments made earlier by the NDP. In fact, Canada is a world leader with our chemicals management plan. It is certainly something that has made us a world leader in assessing our legacy chemicals. Our work with the chemicals management plan has resulted in the assessment of 2,700 chemicals since 2006, when we came to power.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, we believe the Canadian justice system exists to protect Canadians and their communities and not to coddle violent criminals. Yesterday, as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping Canada's streets and communities safe and to bringing the rights of victims back to the heart of the criminal justice system, the Minister of Justice tabled the life means life act.

Pipeline Safety Act  Mr. Speaker, I am left with two thoughts after listening to the member's question. Here is the first. I have listened to him today throughout the debate, both to his questions and his comments. I suppose it is typically Liberal, so I should not be surprised, but there is such inconsistency in the position I am hearing.

Pipeline Safety Act  Mr. Speaker, although I thank the member for the question, I have to say that the assertions I just heard the member make are completely false. I know that the NDP is a party that does not understand the importance of ensuring, in what we are doing in terms of responsible resource development, that the environment is protected and that the economy can continue to move forward.

Pipeline Safety Act  Mr. Speaker, I will first say that I will be sharing my time with my neighbouring colleague, my good friend from Macleod. It is a pleasure to rise today in support of our government's pipeline safety act. As all hon. members know, Canada's natural resource industries play a vital role in supporting the quality of life we enjoy in this country.

Pipeline Safety Act  Mr. Speaker, when our government has made changes in the past regarding pipeline safety systems, members in the opposition have always voted against them. Would the member be able to explain to the House why those members voted against increasing the number of inspections by 15%, doubling the number of comprehensive audits and bringing in new fines for companies that break our strict environmental regulations?
