Taxation  Mr. Speaker, I would like to read a quote from a debate in the House of Commons: “monstrous increases in capital gains [are] making the rich vastly richer and creating a kind of aristocratic feudal economy”. Does anyone know who said that? It was the member for Carleton. Today, he is leading his party in voting to make those gains even more monstrous by voting in favour of that aristocratic feudal economy.

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives have been trying so hard to fake it. They have been trying so hard to pretend they actually care about working Canadians. However, today, there is a vote coming; they finally have to pick a side. Today, every single member of the House is going to have to choose: Are they on the side of a nurse, a plumber or a teacher, or are they on the side of a multi-millionaire?

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, one thing that is kind of astonishing is that, after having been mute or, one might want to say, gagged for eight weeks, the Conservatives have finally found some passion around this issue. Is it not astonishing that, when given an actual opportunity to choose to side with a plumber, to side with a nurse or to side with their multi-millionaire lobbyist pals, the Conservatives are choosing to vote against fairness?

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, squiggle and squirm as they might, it is really hard to put lipstick on a pig. That is exactly what the Conservatives are trying to do today. The Conservatives have found themselves unable, when it really counted, to side with working people. They have been unable to vote for fairness, to vote for the nurse, to vote for the plumber, and now they are evading responsibility for that choice.

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, for the past eight weeks, the Conservatives have been dithering and delaying and deflecting. They were squirming. They were so uncomfortable because they recognized they had to make a really big choice: Were they actually going to be on the side of working people, Canadians who live paycheque to paycheque, or on the side of multi-millionaires?

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, for the past eight weeks, we have watched the unedifying spectacle of the Conservatives squiggling and squirming, deflecting and evading. However, today the Conservatives have no choice; today, they had to pick a side, and we are now seeing the side they have chosen.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for her question. We understand the importance of investing in housing, of investing in affordable housing. We also understand the importance of investing in affordability, for example, in dental care, which is very popular among seniors in Quebec.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I just talked about the much‑needed investments we are making. We also understand that we need to make these investments in a fiscally responsible way. That is why tomorrow we will be asking every member of the House, including the Conservatives, the following question: Are they prepared to support our tax fairness approach or would they rather support the wealthy?

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his hard work. Fairness is a Canadian value. Most of the wealthiest people make most of their money through investments, and they often wind up paying a lower overall tax rate than a nurse or a carpenter. That is not fair. Today, our government is introducing changes that will make our system fairer.

Employment Insurance  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for her question. Let me begin by saying that we understand the difficulties that Canadians and Quebeckers are going through. That is why we are very pleased with the good news that we all heard last week about the Bank of Canada's decision to lower interest rates.

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, Canadians believe in fairness. Many of the wealthiest Canadians make most of their money through investments and they can often wind up paying a lower overall tax rate than a nurse or a carpenter. That is not fair. That is why today our government is introducing changes that will result in a small number of well-off Canadians paying a little more tax.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, we believe it is essential to make investments to make life more affordable for Canadians. That is why we have put forward the most ambitious housing program in Canadian history. That is why we are making dental care available to two million Canadians already. That is why we have created a national system of early learning and child care.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, the people who I sincerely believe need to be unmuzzled are the Conservative MPs. I think it is time for Canadians to know which Conservative MPs believe that a woman's right to choose should be ended in Canada, and it is definitely time for Canadians to know whether Conservative MPs believe in tax fairness or whether they believe in tax breaks for their wealthy friends.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, the Conservative leader is fond of making inflammatory statements. He called our system of early learning and child care a slush fund. He called co-op housing “Soviet-style” housing, and he called brave Ukraine, dismissively, a “faraway” land. However, he is silent on one issue, and that is tax fairness.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, the only people in this city who seem to be gagged are Conservative MPs. They are not allowed to express their true views when it comes to ending a woman's right to choose. None of them is allowed to express a view on tax fairness. Tomorrow, they are going to have to stop deflecting and evading, and are going to have to take a stand.
