Foreign Affairs committee  Mr. Chair, I will respond to that in general terms. The general line of questioning is not inaccurate. There has been ongoing co-operation between Canada and India over many years on extradition-related requests. It is also the case that, historically, Canada has extradited individuals to India, so it's also possible that could happen again in the future.

Foreign Affairs committee  That's an important question. There has been a lot of commentary to that effect, including by our Indian colleagues. It's important to note that there are some commonalities between the case that is under way in the United States and that of Mr. Nijjar. There are also some big differences.

Foreign Affairs committee  I don't feel prepared to discuss the details of the allegations in the case of the U.K. Unlike the case in the United States, we don't have an active investigation under way that is in the public domain. However, it is true that there have been discussions, both between our partners and India but also between our partners—between us, the U.K. and the U.S.

Foreign Affairs committee  Thank you for the question. I'll answer the question in a couple of parts. Briefly, Global Affairs Canada's role in this is the part that I'll speak to. Obviously, the matter of foreign interference cuts across a number of departments and agencies. It's mainly in the public safety portfolio, but we also have a role to play.

Foreign Affairs committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. I'm aware of the article and also of the position that the high commissioner articulated, because it's not actually a new position. It's been repeated in a number of interviews. It is the case that there's an active RCMP investigation under way. I will refer more specific questions to the RCMP directly, but the Indian position has been that, until they receive evidence from a police investigation, they will reserve their right as to how they will respond.

Foreign Affairs committee  Good afternoon. Mr. Chair, members of the committee, I want to thank you for the opportunity this afternoon to discuss Canada-India relations with the committee. We do so today against the backdrop of undeniably significant challenges, but also in the context of our ongoing shared interests in this very important relationship.

Canada-China Relations committee  Mr. Chair, I think that response speaks for itself. The government did take note of that view of the committee. This is not a new policy issue, and I think the government will continue to review its posture, given both present circumstances and developments that may come.

Canada-China Relations committee  As I think the committee is well aware, Canada's long-standing policy takes note of positions on Taiwan, its status and its future, without endorsing or pronouncing on it. Obviously, over the years Taiwan, the people of Taiwan and Canada have worked closely together in many ways—economic and people-to-people.

Canada-China Relations committee  Mr. Chair, I'm happy to take the question. If the ambassador wants to add, he can. I take the point. It's an interesting one. We speak regularly about Taiwan with our colleagues at the State Department and the White House. I'm stating the obvious: We have a different strategy.

Canada-China Relations committee  Thank you for the question, Mr. Chair. The new AAFC office will be announced very soon. It will be operational in the Philippines. Hiring has begun. In terms of the actual dollars, I'm not sure we have that. We'll look during this session, but we're very close to seeing boots on the ground and an open door in our mission there.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  Stephen, did you want to add a word about the humanitarian aspect?

Citizenship and Immigration committee  Thank you for the question. I'm going to try to answer. I have some data here, so bear with me. I'll provide what I can. For the first part of the question, with respect, I don't think we'll be able to answer in the sense of.... Given the decades that Canada has worked in the country, a full list of all the beneficiaries of the programming we did would be an enormous list.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  I believe, Madam Chair, that we'd be happy to provide the data in terms of how many referrals have been made and for how many of those referrals IRCC has been able to offer invitations to apply. We can provide that data. I'd be happy to do so not on your time.

I want to begin by stating what I think we all feel, which is that all Canadians strongly condemn the actions of the Taliban regime, most recently in December, to drastically restrict the rights of women and girls to participate and work. As the minister stated earlier, this has also dramatically impacted the way in which we work with such channels and partners, as we do already have, that we can work with under the circumstances.
