Proceedings of the House and Committees  It ensured that there will be more question periods where the government can be questioned about almost anything, any subject the opposition chooses. That is a measure that ensures the proper functioning of our democracy since it forces the government to stay on its toes and to fully respond to a number of questions. I think that is very good for our democracy. It is extremely positive. What is more, the fact that we will be meeting four times this summer is very positive.

Foreign Affairs  Enough is enough. When will the Liberals stand up for human rights and democracy, and against the dictators in China?

Proceedings of the House and Committees  I think that is very apropos right now, because Canadians are looking to us not only as parliamentarians, as elected officials, but certainly as their beacon of democracy, of what Canada stands for. They are looking to us for inspiration and to be leaders. In a time of crisis, we are the ones who should be at the forefront, taking the leadership role.

Human Resources committee  Usually I would suggest that, particularly for the government, if they want to put forward a friendly amendment, they should perhaps let us know ahead of time so we can consider these things. They've had this since June 4. If she wants to make a formal motion, we'll let democracy decide and then we'll go from there.

Health committee  There were a lot of great points and some that I'll consider different from mine, but that's what democracy is about. I recommend that we put this to a vote.

COVID-19 Pandemic committee  I don't think the term would be “appropriate”, but it would provide some compensation to veterans who truly deserve it. They defend our democracy

Health committee  Thanks, Mr. Chair. To the witnesses, my personal apologies for the delay here, but this is democracy at work and sometimes it gets a little messy. I would support the amendment that Mr. Thériault has put forward. It's logical, as Dr. Jaczek said. It is one that is based on common sense, at least from my perspective.

COVID-19 Pandemic committee  In 2014, the leader of the Liberal Party developed a policy resolution entitled “Restoring Trust in Canada's Democracy”. That's ironic, because right now, again, Parliament is currently shut down. We are prevented from being able to do the good work that we are expected to do. At the time, the Prime Minister said, “Canadians want their Members of Parliament to be effective voices for their communities in Ottawa, and not merely mouthpieces in their communities for an all-too-powerful Prime Minister.”

COVID-19 Pandemic committee  Does the Prime Minister value democracy, or does he still look up to China's basic dictatorship?

COVID-19 Pandemic committee  It's like switching a light on and off when it's convenient for the Prime Minister and for the Liberal Party. That's what they want to do here. That's not Parliament. That's not democracy. When will Mr. Trudeau do the right thing, turn the lights on and get back to work for Canadians?

COVID-19 Pandemic committee  I'll ask the question again. Does the Prime Minister still value the basic dictatorship of China over Canada's democracy?

Industry committee  All this was done with zero public input with regard to an actual bill and zero consultation open in a democracy. Mr. Balsillie, do you think there would be an interest from stakeholders in various sectors to actually now participate in a more wholesome review of the legislation, given the fact that even when we talk about the review that was done in 2013, prior to that it was decades before there was anything meaningful done on this bill?

Industry committee  When they are talking about things like artificial intelligence at the University of Toronto and some of the other highly skilled areas, they're using that technology in ways that liberal democracies might not appreciate. Even if it is not necessarily a firm that is purchased, with the jobs being relocated out of Canada, at the very least it probably bears a second look at what some of these Chinese companies are doing, especially with technological resources and how they are being used in places like Xinjiang.

Industry committee  However, there is also a form of collusion with large industrial groups from those same liberal democracies. For example, the Chinese model often works hand in hand with foreign multinationals. At the end of the day, doesn't the issue come from us being dependent on China? That was on display with medication and rare metals, among others.
