Dina Ouellette  Speaker, I am very pleased to rise here today to congratulate Dina Ouellette, a citizen of my riding, who was chosen to be a guardian of the Olympic flame and to join the Canadian delegation going to Greece to bring it back. Miss Ouellette will join the team as a first nations representative. She currently lives on the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation reserve. In addition to having the opportunity to go to Greece to bring the Olympic flame back to Canada, Dina Ouellette will also be able to follow the flame on its journey across Canada, from Halifax, Nova Scotia as far as London, Ontario.

MAIN ESTIMATES, 2010-11  That is why we are resisting so many of the requests for wild increases in spending that come from the opposition and why we are resisting the Liberals and the NDP when they say that we should move to a 45-day work year, that we should allow Canadians to work for 45 days and then get EI benefits for the rest of the year. We have to resist that kind of thinking that got countries, like Greece, into the difficulties they are in today. We are proud of the record that we have established. We are attracting attention and we are seeing the investment from other countries come to Canada.

International Trade committee  They actually have issues even within Europe, fighting over their geographical indicators between, say, Greece and France. There are a lot of geographical indicators among all the countries within the EU, but Canada will also have some geographical indicators as well, whether for something as broad as Canadian bacon or for other things.

G8 and G20 Summits  Mr. Speaker, let us talk about the economy. Hungary is in danger, Greece is struggling and Spain is next in line. The world is looking to the G20 and to Canada for economic leadership but, instead of providing it, the Prime Minister seems to think he is running a convention for travel writers.

Jobs and Economic Growth Act  As a recent Toronto Sun editorial noted: —the job growth numbers support [the] Prime Minister['s]...contention Canada's economic recovery is among the strongest in the world. You only have to look at the economic carnage in Greece...to appreciate that. What politicians of all stripes on Parliament Hill need to remember is that for average Canadians, the economy is job one. Our Conservative government agrees. That is why we are working to fully implement Canada's economic action plan through the jobs and economic growth act and helping ensure a sustained recovery continues throughout the country.

Agriculture committee  In Europe, five other European Union countries have banned the cultivation of genetically modified corn: Austria, Germany, Greece, Hungary and Luxembourg. I want to emphasize that these are decisions made by scientists and their governments have listened. The decisions that our export markets are making are largely out of our own hands, as I've just shown.

International Trade committee  Chairman, on a job well done by everybody. I would like to say that this meeting tonight takes me back to the ancient agora in Greece, where democracy fully unfolded. It was done in a democratic way. We all had the right to express our views, vote according to our wishes—

Business of Supply  Speaker, I hesitate to rise on a point of order, but the member is a parliamentary secretary. I just think that his reference to Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain as PIGS is not really appropriate. I would ask him to retract that.

Business of Supply  Speaker, for the sake of this honourable House, just for clarification, the term “PIGS” is the first letter of each country—Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain. I believe that the member did not mean anything dishonourable.

Business of Supply  There are also concerns that unsustainable fiscal balance sheets in a number of advanced economies, such as in the PIGS--Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain--could derail the recovery and weaken long-term growth. At the Toronto G20 summit, Canada will work with world leaders to ensure a full recovery and to lay the foundation for future prosperity and growth.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  That would be better than starting to prepare a list of all safe countries, whether it be Greece or other countries. Ultimately, such a list will give refugees certain impressions. There may be abuses because, in order to take the pressure off his shoulders, the minister will be free to respond as he did during the Olympic Games.
