House debate  Having been recently in Olympia where the Olympic flame was lit and in Victoria where it was received from Greece, the beginning of the relays across the country, I know how important the Olympics are after so many years of work from an economic perspective, the human perspective, the inspiration to youth and to sports, and the hundreds of thousands of visitors that will come to Canada.

Jack Poole  On the very day of Jack's passing, the Olympic torch, a symbol for global peace, had just been lit in Greece to mark the beginning of the torch relays for the Vancouver Games. Although saddened by his death, I am encouraged that so many Canadians will carry forward Jack's dream of seeing the Olympics in Vancouver and Canada.

International Trade committee  I've travelled the world extensively as an ambassador for Canada. I've travelled to many countries, such as Mexico, Spain, Italy, Greece, India, and Sri Lanka, so I have a very good understanding of the importance that Canada plays as a provider of food to the world. As I've travelled, I've been impacted by the people through the work of missions--seeing the poor, the orphans, helping to feed the poor, and seeing the hunger first-hand.

Finance committee  These programs have proved to be successful around the world--in over 18 U.S. states, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and I could go on. Studies show that similar investment repays the taxpayers in two to three years. Let me emphasize that these are programs that provide returns to the taxpayer by accessing further capital to grow our businesses.

Canadian Heritage committee  As of today, I have produced 84 records by 50 Canadian composers such as Francis Dhomont, Robert Normandeau, Paul Dolden and Gilles Gobeil, and by 32 foreign composers from France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Sweden and Argentina. Sixty-three of the 84 Canadian records received assistance, which was often modest, from the production program that the Canada Council has been running for more than 20 years.

Veterans Affairs committee  I keep thinking of Sisyphus, the poor guy in classical Greece who was always pushing the rock up the hill, and it was always rolling back on him. We consider our challenge to be pushing that rock up the hill. We consider it our mission to do what we can to inform and educate Canadians and make them aware of what is a rich and distinctive past.

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  Speaker, I want to thank my hon. colleague and his home country for voting the right way for a green socialist party, a party to the left. We thank Greece for leading the way once again in Europe. My hon. colleague talked about these trade deals and he talked about Alvaro Uribe himself. He should know that in a letter from Mr. Rick Arnold of Common Frontiers Canada dated October 2, which was copied to him, there were a lot of comments and concerns.

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  Colombia is moving aggressively and practically forward and that is why we need to engage with that country. I thank the member for his comments with respect to the elections in Greece. If he follows his politics very closely he will understand that the PASOK party has evolved from the socialist party that it was 30-odd years ago to a modern, state-of-the-art, centre type of party.

Information & Ethics committee  I think that's where the fear is coming from. Obviously, those fears are shared around the world. To the chair's point, Greece, Japan, and Germany weren't all ecstatic about this. That's especially so when you hear about people who don't want this surrounding a town or street. It could be based on the fact that there is inadequate protection under the individual countries' laws.

Information & Ethics committee  The privacy issues are probably the area of most interest. Just as an example, we understand that in Greece, Japan, Germany, the U.K., the U.S., and Australia, and now in Canada, privacy concerns have been raised with the jurisdictional authorities. It is an interesting question about whether or not services such as Street View or Canpages make the connection with the privacy jurisdictions, whether it is, in Canada, the federal Privacy Commissioner or the three provinces that have their own personal privacy acts, and whether those privacy concerns were dealt with in advance of commencing the taking of images across the country.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  The issue was that if a child was born in a country that didn't confer citizenship, let's say, Greece, Japan, and so forth, Canada, or one of the countries, immediately would come in and give that child citizenship based on the United Nations Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
