Divorce Act  Mr. Speaker, with respect to the first point, I can assure the member that I was born and raised during many Liberal governments. Most importantly, the nice thing about Canada is that about 75% of our Confederation has been ruled by Liberal governments. Therefore, he has reason to be optimistic going forward, especially with this administration, as we have been able to tackle so many issues in a way that has really benefited Canada's middle class.

Divorce Act  Mr. Speaker, it is such a pleasure to rise and speak to what I believe is a significant piece of legislation. It has been many years since we have had substantial changes to the Divorce Act. In fact, one would have to go back a couple of decades to when we saw some reforms. One of my colleagues across the way gave us a little history and mentioned his year of birth being 1984.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, the Government of Canada over the last few years has taken a different, very progressive approach at trying to provide support for children in Canada. One of those would have been, for example, the Canada benefit program, lifting thousands of children out of poverty.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, I appreciated the history lesson from my colleague across the way with respect to divorce acts and how they came into being. I appreciate the fact that he was born in 1984. The member talked about the patchwork in Canada at that time. To me, it emphasizes the importance of recognizing that, yes, it is good that we have this legislation and that it will move forward to committee.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, it is with pleasure that I table a petition today that has been signed by hundreds of residents of Winnipeg North. The petitioners are asking for the Prime Minister and members of Parliament to reflect on how important it is that we have a national pharmacare program.

Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership Implementation Act  Mr. Speaker, I can appreciate that the leader of the Green Party has been consistent, along with the New Democrats, on trade and trade agreements. Both parties just do not feel that trade agreements are something we should be moving forward on. I want to give a specific example of why an agreement of this nature is a great benefit.

Government Response to Petitions  Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36(8), I have the honour to table, in both official languages, the government's response to one petition. While I am on my feet, I move: That the House do now proceed to orders of the day.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, on a point of order, I suspect if you were to canvass the House, you would find unanimous consent to see the clock at 5:38 p.m., so we could begin private members' hour.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, my colleague made a really important point on which I want to seek clarification. The Minister of Public Safety has indicated very clearly that we are doing a complete review, which will even go back to 2014 when the decision was made under the Harper government to transfer her from maximum security to medium security.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I would recommend to my friend across the way that he read some of the debate that we had yesterday inside this beautiful chamber. We talked about enshrining the rights of victims in our military justice system to resemble the civil process. That means that our government has legislation enshrining rights of victims.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, the member just said that Liberals have not shown compassion. If he had listened to what I said, the compassion that Liberals have demonstrated, whether it has been the Prime Minister, the Minister of Public Safety, myself or others, is genuine compassion. There is not one member of the House who does not recognize just how hideous a crime was committed and who is not absolutely disgusted by it.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, our corrections officials, our civil servants, back in 2014, made the transfer to a medium-security facility, which ultimately allowed for anyone attending those facilities to go to a healing lodge. That is the reality. Stephen Harper as prime minister knew that.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, what I would first like to do is suggest to those who are following the debate to question the motive behind the motion before us today. For example, we often have opposition days where opposition parties try to figure out what issues are of great interest to Canadians.
