Government Operations committee  All of that within the next couple of weeks--and earlier if possible, of course. In the interests of trying to be fair and generous to my colleagues, I will leave it at that. You owe me, but I'm just saying...

Veterans Affairs committee  I'm not trying to be confrontational. I want to get a better understanding, because when you do compare it, this plan is fair and generous compared to other plans, sir.

Veterans Affairs committee  He said that, in all honesty, this pension plan is not stacked but blended. The CF and RCMP pension plans are fair and generous in comparison with other pensions. The PSSA and other federal pension plans, provincial pension plans, most teacher plans, and many others are set up in exactly the same way. My daughter's a teacher, I know something about the teachers' plans.

Immigration  Speaker, without reference to any particular cases, we already have what the UN High Commissioner for Refugees calls one of the most fair and generous refugee determination systems in the world. It is a system with an acceptance rate for asylum claims that is twice as high as in comparable democracies, such as France and Britain.

Veterans Affairs committee  But at the end of the day we were basically trying to put together a package and bring back as much of this information as we possibly could to make sure that it was fair and generous. Mr. Chair, first of all, when I went to cabinet I wanted to make sure we had enough money to do the job. Our best-guess estimate was that we'd have 4,000 people who could potentially receive the ex gratia payment.

Employment Insurance  Mr. Speaker, what we are lucky enough as Canadians to have is an EI system that is both fair and generous. It responds to changing local market conditions. Let us be clear about what the Liberals are asking for. They are asking for an increase in payroll taxes so that Canadians can work for 45 days and collect benefits for a year after that.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  But I get the sense that you are dissatisfied with the performance of Indian Oil and Gas Canada or with the performance of the federal government generally in living up to its current responsibilities, and that you are looking for greater assurances that in fact IOGC or the federal government will exercise its responsibility, fiduciary duty, in a much more respectful manner going forward. Is that a fair statement generally? Is that what I'm hearing you say?

Controlled Drugs and Substances Act  Before considering the bill, we should be clear on what principles should govern our approach to illegal drugs and other criminal activities. Canadians are a fair and generous people. We have never been as harsh as our American neighbours. We recognize that many social forces push people toward crime: poverty, poor education, unstable childhoods, social isolation and many more.

Business of Supply  Students died in massive numbers, due in large part to tuberculosis. I do not think this was seen as fair and generous then or now by aboriginal people or by Canadians. To me it appears as though there is a disconnect between the version of history put forth by a Prime Minister to a foreign audience that British approaches to the aboriginal population were some of the fairest and most generous of the period.

Public Safety committee  I know you want the opportunity to challenge it in a process that you think is more fair. We generally agree with that; it's just a question of the how. Security certificates. Outlawing them completely? I'm not sure that's the will of the Parliament of Canada, but we'll find out soon enough.

Veterans Affairs  Speaker, as everyone well knows, we are treating our veterans fairly and that man, that individual, that member came from a government that had 13 years to do it and did not. What we have done is fair and generous and the veterans know that and the people in those communities know that. Why? Because I have met with them and he has not.

Income Tax Amendments Act, 2006  I will say one thing to the hon. member. He should stand up for the taxpayers in his jurisdiction and support tax fairness in general as a principle because the people on this side of the House certainly do. We will make the difficult decisions when we need to. I think the hon. member should support difficult decisions when they are made for the right reason, like the one that he spoke of.

Business of Supply  Therefore, the legal process is not yet completed and is moving forward. The agreement, as everyone knows, is a very fair and generous agreement, one which I take immense personal satisfaction in as a Canadian in seeing come to fruition and one in which this government takes pride. It provides, importantly, for a truth and reconciliation commission that will be established together with a research centre with a budget of $60 million and a five year mandate.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  In the meantime, the government states, on the CIC website and elsewhere, that the current system is fair and generous. Our experience indicates otherwise. Thank you for listening to me and giving me the opportunity to speak to you about these issues.

Official Languages Act  We all know that. However, it is not a law. Canada's refugee determination system is a fair and generous one that follows clearly defined processes. The government is committed to ensuring that our refugee determination system reflects the values of Canadians and that it has their confidence.
