As I mentioned before, during my time as the Minister of Status of Women during the previous government, I had to present myself several times to this committee. The maintenance of transparency with respect to the mandate letter, as it is with respect to the estimates and other things, is I think very important for the Canadian public.

Status of Women committee  Thank you very much for taking the time today to come and chat with us. I have some personal experience with this. I have a gentleman in my life by the name of Kit Leitch, who is my father. His grandchildren now affectionately tell him regularly, “Papa, put your ears in”, because for the longest time he did not want to grapple with the issue of hearing loss.

Status of Women committee  I speak to both organizations with respect to this, as you both emphasized prevention and education. Do you have specific pieces of literature? Do you have specific statistics that you would like us to communicate? I'm a health care professional, a pediatric surgeon, and I don't deal with hearing loss unless it's a birth defect.

Status of Women committee  I know the motion was tabled before, but I just have a comment. Having served in the role of minister of status of women, I think it would be very beneficial for us to hear from the minister on what her new mandate may be and the direction she would like to take. Obviously, that could colour what studies we choose to follow here.

Status of Women committee  I have one question and just one comment with regard to something Emmanuella mentioned earlier. I completely agree with your approach—I think, Diane, you were mentioning it—with respect to social behavioural change for children. I think that's the language we should all be using.
