Government Operations committee  Part III is on the reports on plans and priorities and the departmental performance reports. That's why we say there are three parts to the estimates. But I'm not clear if your question was on that part or the fact that we have supplementary estimates (A), (B), and (C) as well. I'm not sure if I answered your question.

Government Operations committee  Technology is not going to magically, all of a sudden, provide it without that clarity of thought and direction, so I very much appreciate the committee taking the time to look at this now and I hope we get some clear direction.

Government Operations committee  What the government responded with was that we would start providing additional accrual-based information to parliamentarians, and we would assess, after a number of years, what the experience had been with parliamentarians and if they found the information useful. Departments have told us loud and clear that future pro forma balance sheets are of absolutely no use, with some mixed response on the statement of revenues and expenses in terms of forecasting that.

Human Resources committee  Don Drummond, the economist, often says that there is no skills shortage. There is a price that clears the market. Those who are the most competitive will attract the most skilled workers. All of our research at the council shows there is more to attracting workers and meeting their needs than just money; considerations such as career advancement and safety also come into play.

Status of Women committee  A number of national and provincial studies have been undertaken around the economic benefits of government investment in early learning and child care. It Is very clear that for every dollar invested in a system of public and non-profit high quality early learning and child care, there is a $2 to $6 return. This has been demonstrated in three separate studies by three separate economic researchers, so we do know.

Copyright Modernization Act  Those benefits are reflected in the raft of groups that are supportive of this legislation, namely, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, the Business Coalition for Balanced Copyright, the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network, the Canadian Intellectual Property Council, and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. I could go on, but I think the point is clear. This bill has wide-ranging support from those who see it as a key platform in the growth of the digital economy and the creation of knowledge economy employment. I must say that in listening to the opposition members, it is as though they have forgotten the process by which we have arrived here.

Agriculture committee  In the supply chain, what we've done now...we used to have hog farms that we owned or that had different contractual relationships for hog production in Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario. It's now just Manitoba. Of those hogs I mentioned, the 20%, we own them 100%. So it's a clear, simple business model. We have now consolidated all our slaughter into one plant in Brandon, Manitoba, a state-of-the art, double-shifted scale facility. We do still have a smaller plant in Lethbridge, which is shipping product to Japan, and it just fills a unique opportunity in that way, but we've consolidated all of the slaughter.

Status of Women committee  I have some specific questions for Linda Hasenfratz, because it's pretty exciting when you're talking about having 16,000 employees worldwide, and 9,000 of them are in Canada. Based on your discussion, it's clear that probably half of them are women. The target of my questions, first, is the women in non-traditional industries. First, Madam Chair, with your permission, we had a previous witness—Action travail des femmes du QuĂ©bec Inc.

Agriculture committee  You're not suggesting that we implement this I house or duplication inspection up here, are you? I just want to be clear on that.

Agriculture committee  Now, it's a random re-inspection, but we would be detained. We have to reroute ourselves to the I house. Clearing U.S. customs doesn't allow our meat to go all the way to the customer in the United States or to the end user for re-inspection. It has to occur at the I house. If we go all the way to the customer by error, the product is used by error, that product is declared adulterant, and all the production that the product was used in is condemned, for want of a better word.

Status of Women committee  It might be public education when those people take francization courses in Quebec. It would be a question of making it clear that equality between men and women falls under the core values of Quebeckers, for example. That could be done in francization courses, but also by example. They could be integrated in the process without necessarily forcing things on them.

Status of Women committee  They are scared of a lot of things, and that significantly limits them. I just wanted to make that clear. It was a finding in our last study. Women don't know their rights, but would like to assert them and have that information.

Copyright Modernization Act  I do not know if my hon. colleague deals with technical protection measures, but they are not like a lock that gets picked and then everyone gets to run in. It is a complex code of software. The fact is the government refused to deal with very clear, simple amendments that would protect students with perceptual disabilities to access works that they had a right to access. The government refused to work with them and would treat them the same as they would a pirate.

Copyright Modernization Act  Let us think of an iPod, not to tax it like the NDP would, but to imagine that downloading something onto these types of devices is illegal under the old law. I cannot think of a more crystal clear example of why change is necessary. From those educators teaching their classes from a distance to creative people at home putting together mash-up videos and sharing them online, we have ensured that legitimate uses of copyrighted material are permitted under the law.

Status of Women committee  There is certainly a lack of information on the wide range of existing opportunities. Salaries are what gets their attention. As I said earlier, we can see a clear difference between traditionally female and traditionally male sectors. In addition, we demystify stereotypes. For example, some jobs are said to be more physically demanding, but that is not necessarily the case.
