Public Safety committee  Counter-radicalization focuses too much on the religious aspect and pulls it out of context. It doesn't focus on state violence. It doesn't focus on exclusion, discrimination, Islamophobia, alienation, or any of those things. It wasn't a policy panel. It wasn't something for government people to take notes about to make policy. It was more like an academic approach.

U.S. Decision Regarding Travel Ban  He is chairperson of the Windsor Islamic Council. He said, “It is no longer enough to denounce Islamophobia. The rise of anti-Islamic sentiment has reached dangerous levels that threaten the very fabric of our society.” This ban will have a disastrous implication for thousands of innocent travellers and refugees.

Canadian Heritage committee  Remember, that's 10 meetings, including the actual writing of the report, the reviewing of the report, and so on, at least the way this is written right now. This motion calls for us to deal with not merely Islamophobia, but all forms of systemic racism—all of them—and of religious discrimination.

Canadian Heritage committee  We already have two topics there that need to be studied. Then, of course, within the religious discrimination, there were the instructions on Islamophobia. I guess Parliament also wanted to see a community-centred focus with a holistic response through evidence-based policy-making. I wonder if we're going to have some sort of a discussion about what that means and what we might expect that to look like at the other end of this project.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination  This year, we saw racism manifest in its deadliest form with a shooting in Sainte-Foy, Quebec. Reported cases of Islamophobia have more than doubled in the past three years alone. We see mosques and synagogues vandalized. We see girls and boys, women and men targeted for just being who they are. On this day, we need to reflect on these startling facts and resolve to fight racism in all its vilest forms, right in Canada and around the world.

Islamophobia  I am a proud Canadian among hundreds and thousands of others who will not tolerate hate based on religion or skin colour. I rise today with my fellow Canadians to reject and condemn Islamophobia. On this historic day when petition e-411 is tabled, I am honoured to bring forward motion 103 calling on our government to condemn Islamophobia and work toward eliminating all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination.

Islamophobia  I am proud to say that a motion condemning Islamophobia, based on this petition, was passed in the House of Commons with unanimous consent. I thank my colleagues across the aisle for their enduring commitment to the Canadian ideal of religious freedom.

Preclearance Act, 2016  When I was the head of law and enforcement at the NAFTA environment commission, we grew very concerned because concerns about the movement of contaminated fuel and hazardous waste across borders were being put aside because of the push to enable trade and because of the concern that people perhaps with a brown face or a different ethnic background became the big scare. There has been a lot of talk on the other side of the House that we need to address Islamophobia, yet we heard at committee on this very bill from Safiah Chowdhury, representative of the Islamic Society of North America, extreme concern about the implications of this bill. By the way, I heard nothing from the member talking about any of the provisions actually in this bill.

Justice committee  If you maintain it as it is, you could have incidents occurring that are increasing the sense of alienation and marginalization of specific groups while appropriate attention and resources are not being provided by government through policies, as I mentioned in my submission, that specifically combat Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, or any type of xenophobia. Also, building on the existing policies that we have to promote things like multiculturalism, inclusion, and so forth would seem to me to be important to consider as well.

Religious Discrimination  Speaker, parliamentarians had an opportunity yesterday to unanimously condemn religious discrimination, including Islamophobia, but the Liberals did not rise to the occasion. They voted against the motion condemning all forms of racism and religious discrimination, including discrimination against Muslims.

Multiculturalism  Our country is a cultural mosaic that gets richer and more inclusive every day. Last week, we discussed in the House Motion No. 103, which condemns Islamophobia and all forms of racism and religious discrimination. Let us work together and unite our voices to make tomorrow even better.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I apologize. What does the member have against shining a light on Islamophobia? What does the member have against the Muslim community that he would want to take away from a perfectly good motion that was already presented to the House?

Business of Supply  Speaker, I want to ask my hon. colleague a very simple question. Why does he oppose the word “Islamophobia”?

Business of Supply  Speaker, obviously I oppose anything that I do not understand. To date, I do not understand what Islamophobia means. Therefore, as a politician I need more details to understand things, to absorb things, because we represent the people, and while we do so, we have to be able to reflect on that understanding before we support or do not support anything that comes our way.
