Medical Assistance in Dying committee Thank you, Chair. I have a follow-up question for Ms. Mehdi. I understand that you support choice, and you support the right not to choose as well—to not opt for this. I think everybody is generally in agreement on that. I want to come to this other point, where you argued that people are not emotionally or intellectually fully developed until about their mid-twenties.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee Thank you very much, Chair. My questions or comments are for Ms. Gupta. I would just like to hear you express your views on these. First, do you believe there is any real threat to a minority or a disabled community, a religious community or those with social constraints from the access to MAID legislation that exists?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee If someone had stage 4 cancer, we wouldn't argue with them or say please take one more round of chemo, please do this or please do that, if they had made this choice, but we seem to want to impose that on people with a mental illness.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee Thank you, Chair. My question is for Dr. Wiebe. You mentioned that we make this huge distinction between physical illness pain and suffering, and mental illness pain and suffering. Can you really speak to the issue, that when it comes to mental illness it seems that we see it as endlessly fixable and that treatment must be relentless and go on and on and on.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee No. The statistics in fact say the opposite. So what kind of a safeguard would you propose, then? Is there something there that you think would prevent that slippery slope?
May 25th, 2022Committee meeting
Pamela Wallin
Medical Assistance in Dying committee All right. So you're tying that more specifically to the COVID situation.
