Seniors  Mr. Speaker, Canada needs national leadership to rally around the idea that profits should not be made off of seniors and that seniors should not be neglected. The conditions were equally appalling at the Herron long-term care home in Quebec. Thirty-one seniors died at that facility.

Questions Passed as Orders for Returns  With regard to the three tax provisions proposed in the Fall Economic Statement 2018 to accelerate business investment for the 2018-19 fiscal year: (a) what is the estimated number of businesses that have benefited, broken down by (i) tax provision, (ii) size of business, (iii) economic sector; (b) what is the estimated increase in total business investment since the three tax provisions came into force; (c) what is the estimate of the number of jobs created by businesses in Canada since the coming into force of these three tax provisions; and (d) what is the estimate of the number of businesses that have chosen to continue operating in Canada rather than relocate abroad since the coming into force of these three tax provisions?

Health  Mr. Speaker, I thank the Prime Minister for that response. The Prime Minister promised to help Canadians living with disabilities. He made that promise weeks ago, but he has yet to follow through. When will the Prime Minister provide support for people with disabilities?

Health  Mr. Speaker, we have seen that in this country Canadians have to make an impossible choice when they are sick. Without paid sick leave, they have to choose between going to work and potentially risking infecting their co-workers or staying at home and not knowing if they can pay their bills.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, we are very proud that in this Parliament, we have been doing everything we can to fight for people, and though I do acknowledge that the government has come along, it has taken a lot of pressure, a lot of pushing and a lot of fighting. I want to highlight how important it is for us to have this opportunity to be in Parliament to continue to push the government to deliver better for Canadians.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, we absolutely believe that we need to work with the provinces to have long-term paid sick leave. Let me clarify. Right now, what I am suggesting to the federal government is that it use the existing tools, like the CERB and employment insurance, to immediately deliver paid sick leave to all Canadians.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, it is really a focus on people. Everything we do, and everything New Democrats have done so far, is to focus on what people need. Right now we have to counter some of the fear-mongering from the right and Conservatives about debt and deficits and instead make real investments in a brighter future for people.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, I want to begin by saying that, yes, the New Democrats support the right to opt out with full compensation. However, during a pandemic, the job of MPs is not to follow every rule and to say that we cannot deal with an issue, because there is a pandemic, a crisis in which people are dying and seniors are facing major challenges.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, I thank the member for his question. It is clear to me that the purpose of the Canada emergency wage subsidy is to help workers no matter where they work. If a company, business or organization—even a political party—is experiencing difficulties and has fewer resources, that employer might cut the number of staff members.

Proceedings of the House and Committees  Madam Speaker, thank you for giving me the honour to take part in this debate. I want to thank members for the opportunity to share my thoughts in this debate. Throughout this pandemic we have been able to use the tools of Parliament to push for better for Canadians. In the negotiations about how we move forward, that should be our goal.

Canadian Dairy Commission Act  Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. If you seek it, I believe you would find unanimous consent for the following motion. I move that the House note that nobody should have to choose between taking a day off of work due to illness and being able to pay the bills. I call upon the government to work with provinces without delay to ensure that every worker in Canada who needs it has access to two weeks' paid sick leave a year, and to consider amending the Canada emergency response benefit, the employment insurance program and other federal mechanisms as the means to achieve this goal.

Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act  Mr. Speaker, the member for Timmins—James Bay is on fire today, so I thought I would just add a bit to that fire. He has talked about not going back to “the old normal”. Let us not go back to normal; we need to go forward to build a better Canada. Maybe the member could talk a bit about what that better Canada would look like.

Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act  Mr. Speaker, the member for Timmins—James Bay has touched on a lot of what we need to consider when we move forward. We have seen in this crisis a lot of the glaring inequality laid bare. It has shown what we have known for a long time and has made it abundantly clear that what happened in the past was not good enough, the precarious employment that people suffered, the lack of social programs and a social safety net that was not designed for the realities that people are facing right now.

Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for this question because it gives us an opportunity to talk about the impact of decades of neglect of our health care system. Decades of federal government cuts, Conservative or Liberal, to health care have resulted in health care provincial systems that have been starved of funding.

Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act  Mr. Speaker, we could absolutely solve this problem. First, if a company right now is registered in an offshore tax haven and wants government support, it can commit to removing its money from that offshore tax haven and putting it back into the public. It can commit to contributing its fair share.
