Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I have had the opportunity to work with the member for Guelph over the last few months, and I know how strongly he feels about the objectives of the national housing strategy. We share his desire to make sure that this makes a big impact in his riding. Again, the key words of leadership and partnership matter so much.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, the key to making good public policy in the federal government is the ability to listen to the views of others, which may not be exactly aligned with views we may have held for some time. Tim Richter has been a key advocate of housing first. He has also been a key advocate of communities first because investment in communities first, in part through housing first, is what gives communities the best ability to make an impact on homelessness.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I again congratulate and thank members on the other side, in particular, the member for Saskatoon West, for all the hard work they have done in the last years in stressing how important it is for every Canadian to have access to safe and affordable homes. In this context, I am glad she is now aware that we will all be working together to make sure that the new partnership provided by the federal government will be felt across Canada, and certainly in her home province of Saskatchewan.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, the two key words in this conversation are “leadership” and “partnership”, “leadership” because Canadians and housing leaders and experts, for many years, have been waiting for the return of the federal government in housing, and “partnership” because, as we have just heard, these investments make sense when they are made in partnership with provinces, territories and municipalities.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I very much welcome this opportunity to speak to the motion by the hon. member for Saskatoon West. It gives me the opportunity to update the House and Canadians on the impressive progress we are making to increase the supply of quality, affordable and suitable housing, especially for the most vulnerable in our society.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I would like to begin by thanking my colleague from Hochelaga for all the work she has been doing for many years now to convince the Canadian government to resume an active role in housing, not just as a leader, but as a partner. I would like to personally congratulate her and encourage her to work even harder to ensure that the Canadian government's renewed involvement will have as big an impact as possible for Canadian families in the decade to come.

Child Care  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for giving me the opportunity to say that we are very aware of how important it is to invest in educational child care, not only to support the work of families and reduce poverty, but also to ensure gender equality in the workplace and at home in 2018.

Child Care  Mr. Speaker, I am again very pleased to be given this opportunity to tell the House and all Canadians how proud we are to be since 2015 investing in a historically large investment plan to build more quality, affordable and accessible child care services across Canada for all Canadians including indigenous Canadians and families.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I would like to begin by thanking the member for Shefford for his support in the fight against homelessness. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the advisory committee on homelessness for their hard work and excellent report. Yesterday in Montreal, I had the opportunity to launch “reaching home”, a program that will double investment in the fight against homelessness and reduce homelessness in Canada by at least 50% over the next few years.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, indeed I did not have enough time in my earlier response to detail other measures that we put in, in favour of seniors, and unfortunately the Harper Conservatives voted against them. We enhanced the Canada pension plan six months after we came into office to increase the generosity, the flexibility, and the care with which our seniors will be able to retire when they do retire.

Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to talk about the well-being and welfare of our seniors. Unfortunately, I am less happy to talk about the fact that Conservatives voted against every measure we put forward in favour of seniors. We have brought the age of eligibility for old age security back to 65 years old, which is going to prevent 100,000 seniors from entering severe poverty.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I would like to congratulate the member for her interest in the fight against homelessness and in ensuring that every Canadian has a safe and affordable home. However, I would invite her to look very closely at the national housing strategy and the important announcement we made yesterday, which will have an immense impact on the fight against homelessness in the next 10 years.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for her interest in this issue. However, I invite her to take a close look at the content of the strategy we announced yesterday. I invite her to consult the stakeholders across Canada, especially those in Quebec, who were thrilled not only with the significant result we announced yesterday, but also with the incredibly inclusive process we have been following over the past few months.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the member for Brampton Centre for his support in the fight against homelessness. I would also like to thank and congratulate the member for Spadina—Fort York and all members of the homelessness advisory committee for their hard work and excellent report.
