Cyprus  In 1964, UN peacekeepers, including a Canadian contingent, took over from the British troops. That year, Greece dispatched approximately 5,000 troops to Cyprus while Turkey built its military strength up to 10,000 on the island. That is how the green line, or neutral zone between the Turkish and Greek neighbourhoods of Nicosia, came to be.

Republic Of Macedonia  Speaker, the decision to grant diplomatic recognition to the former Yugoslav Republic is long overdue. In 1995 Greece recognized its independence and yet last month the Minister of Foreign Affairs was still writing letters saying Canada could not recognize it because of its dispute with Greece. It seems the minister does not really know what is happening in this case.

Republic Of Macedonia  The reason given for this is "concerns regarding bilateral disputes between FYROM and the Republic of Greece". This is a poor excuse, considering that Greece willingly recognized this country on September 13, 1995 and signed an accord to this effect over nine months ago. I have a copy of the accord if the minister would like to read it.

Greece  The Greeks provided the two pillars of modern world: science and democracy. We offer our best wishes to all Greeks and all those who are Greek at heart on Greece's national day.

Joliette Libellules  Mr. Speaker, at the world school volleyball championship held in Greece from May 10 to 17, 1998, the Libellules of Joliette's Thérèse-Martin high school placed 13th, thus obtaining the best result for a Canadian team since the beginning of this sports competition.

The Budget  He has spoken about the budget, and I will answer him on that, but first of all, let me reply to another point he has made. He made a comparison between Quebec and Greece, which did not want to be part of another country, whereas Quebec wants to be an independent country. This is too simplistic a comparison, because Greece has always been a country on its own, whereas Quebec has always been part of Canada.

Armenian People  Modern Turkey has yet to recognize this serious crime, which has already been recognized by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, the European Parliament, the Permanent People's Tribunal, Argentina, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Russia, Syria, Uruguay, Venezuela and, just a week ago, Belgium. Closer to home, this genocide has been formally recognized by the Quebec National Assembly and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

Income Tax Act  When the OECD studied this question, it called Canada a middle technology country along with other countries such as India, Greece and Mexico. Of the top 14 countries, only Italy's record on R and D spending is worse than Canada's. This is not only embarrassing but it places Canada on a very dangerous path. Relying on other countries to do our basic research for us is simply not acceptable because it means that the information we get will be based on their priorities, not ours.

National Defence Act  The death penalty has been abolished in many western nations with which Canada has very strong ties. Among our NATO allies are countries such as Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Spain. I could list a number of countries which have done away with the death penalty as a punishment for all civil and military offences.

Supply  I remind the House that Mitsubishi is bigger than the country of Indonesia in terms of size. Philip Morris is bigger than New Zealand. Wal-Mart is bigger than Poland, Israel and Greece. In my judgment and in the judgment of my party, if the MAI is passed and accepted by the government, it will mean that we will be turning over the sovereignty of our country to the whims of large multinational corporations.

Final Offer Arbitration In Respect Of West Coast Ports Operations Act  Since ancient times people without power in the traditional sense have been using the tactic of withholding their services as a bargaining tool to achieve their objectives without resorting to violence. In ancient Greece the playwright Lysistrata tells us that the women in that community were so sick of their husbands warmongering and pillaging expeditions that they withheld their services from their mates until the men would listen to reason.

Ice Storm 1998  In particular, I would like to mention the co-operation, solidarity and friendship demonstrated by the Greek community in the Mauricie region, especially in Trois-Rivières. I told you earlier that it was Soula Pelletier, originally from Greece, who contacted me to invite me to come and meet these people. It was explained to me that people had run out of money and may have had little to eat for several days. Sometimes we have good ideas in this kind of situation.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board Act  The U.S. is moving in that direction. The U.K. is now doing it. Australia is now doing it. Switzerland, Finland, Greece and Japan all have variations on the theme. Let us not let the hon. member opposite suggest there are no other countries going to this plan. The hon. member asked me about the liability.

Supply  I learned, however, when I looked into it, when I examined more closely the information submitted to us today, that .05 was the level already in Australia, Belgium, Finland, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, even France. So, this is perhaps not as extreme as it appears. Perhaps it is not such an exaggeration to consider a lower blood alcohol level in Canada and in Quebec, if that is what people want.
