Transport committee  That's pretty clear. When you put something into a law that says “information collected” you're not saying “for the purpose of collecting information”. There are two different things here. You've put forward an argument to go against this amendment that is really quite specious.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  It remains a concern for Amnesty. Not every individual who applies for refugee status from Iran would be at risk, but it's clear at this moment that the situation is worsening, and great care has to be taken in these cases. That's my presentation. In terms of the recommendations, I don't need to go there; I would just re-emphasize those made by Mr.

Government Operations committee  We are looking at every one. Of course, as the minister noted, extensions or top-ups already have clear terms and conditions, so that's less of an issue. It's in a new programming area that we work very closely with our colleagues in the departments to ensure, as a new program comes forward, that the terms and conditions are clear, that the oversight is there, that departments have the appropriate management systems in place.

International Trade committee  That's the current dynamic. Where that's going to end up in six months or so is not so clear in terms of the kinds of pressures the coalition is exerting. I'm not suggesting that there's a risk to the agreement or anything. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm just saying that there is that pressure there, and it's not going to go away.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  As Minister Finley has said, it's our hope that it will lead to a benchmark where all of the 400-plus provincially regulated professional agencies will give foreign-trained professionals a clear answer on their application for credential recognition within a year of their application. We cannot guarantee everyone that they'll get their credentials recognized; it would be irresponsible to do so, but people shouldn't have to wait five years.

Public Safety committee  Simply patrolling the border hoping for a chance encounter with criminal activity is not an effective use of government's finite resources. Several years ago the RCMP patrolled specific parts of the border. Over time it became clear that criminal organizations knew exactly how to avoid detection by such patrols and their effectiveness became questionable. As a result, we have become more intelligence-led, developed solid partnerships at home and abroad, and found better ways to share information.

Finance committee  The paper analyzes the new conditions in the United States and poses the clear possibility that tax cuts may cause a contraction in the economy; that is, they might actually reduce GDP and worsen a recession. The reason is that in a deflationary environment, tax cuts may reduce inflationary expectations, thus raising real interest rates.

Canadian Heritage committee  If the National Arts Training Program does not appear to be the appropriate solution, in the opinion of the federal government, it is urgent that the latter provide a clear response regarding its short- and long-term intentions for professional training in the film, television and interactive media sectors. The survival of a unique institution with a long track record is at stake.

Justice committee  We send out a very clear message to them: you're going to jail if you get caught and convicted under these new laws. I think that's exactly what Canadians have been wanting to hear and have been waiting to hear from their government in Ottawa, and I'm pleased that we're delivering on that.

Justice committee  I am also told by law enforcement agencies, border services, and others, that we have a major problem with people bringing drugs into this country. But we have to be very clear who we're talking about. The people who bring drugs into this country are not those experimenting with drugs on a Saturday night, or poor individuals who have become addicted. These are the people who are involved in organized crime.

National Defence committee  We also continue to sustain and use our fleet of vehicles devoted to countering this threat, specifically the enhanced route-clearing capability that was brought into service over the past two years, and we will continue to improve our force protection to the maximum extent possible while still being able to carry out the mission we have been given.

Corporate Social Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries  We are all the more justified in calling upon the government to finally take action because, while the round table recommendations are clear, sensible and reasonable, our country is faced with an immense task, particularly with respect to coordinating with the other countries involved and reinforcing the capacity for governance as far as corporate social responsibility is concerned.

House debate  The government is very much concerned with consumers' best interests. The aims of the bill I believe have consumers' best interests in mind. However, it is not clear the instruments the bill intends to use are in the right direction. We need to ask ourselves, under the current process, are consumers protected by allowing a free and competitive marketplace to operate?

House debate  I would like to commend the member for Windsor West for bringing forward this bill, because I think at its heart is the desire to offer a greater choice to the consumer. It is also clear that on the face of it, the bill is commendable in the sense that it argues that implementing the bill will provide us with safer, cleaner cars and that the consumer will have a greater choice.

House debate  We want to protect intellectual property. We want to ensure these things will be maintained. There is a clear effort from the groups supporting the bill to have a basic set of principles that will be accountable. In the United States, people can easily download any of the software they need for a vehicle with just a credit card purchase.
