Disposition of Abolition of Early Parole Act  Mr. Speaker, I do not believe Canadians will take any lessons from the NDP on how to protect communities and get tough on crime. As chair of the justice committee, I can say that the New Democrats oppose our efforts to get tough on drug-related crimes. They oppose our efforts to get tough on sexual crimes against children.

Disposition of Abolition of Early Parole Act  Mr. Speaker, the member has asked three different questions. I do not think we have time to answer all of them, but it bears noting he is a member of a party that has consistently preferred the rights of criminals over the rights of victims. Time and time again, I listen to Liberal members talk on our criminal justice bills and virtually never do we hear the word “victim” used.

Disposition of Abolition of Early Parole Act  Mr. Speaker, before question period, I was highlighting the many different initiatives our Conservative government had taken since 2006 to make our communities safer, such as bills that strengthen our justice system and efforts to put more police officers on the streets and the funding that is required for that.

Disposition of Abolition of Early Parole Act  Madam Speaker, I am pleased to speak about the importance of Bill C-59 and to encourage all hon. members to support its swift passage. Our government has said from day one when we came to power in 2006 that our highest priority is to protect the safety and security of Canadians.

Protecting Canadians by Ending Sentence Discounts for Multiple Murders Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague, who is on the justice committee, for his intervention on this bill and his cautious support of the legislation that would allow consecutive sentencing for multiple murderers. He referred to the whole notion that the bill would not lead to deterrence.

Protecting Canadians by Ending Sentence Discounts for Multiple Murders Act  Madam Speaker, I would like to challenge my colleague from Windsor—Tecumseh on the statement he has just made. He has suggested that dangerous offender legislation is more appropriate to sentence multiple murderers. In fact, he knows that a sentence for a dangerous offender is actually indeterminate and that applications can be made on an ongoing basis for that offender to be released from prison.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of newcomers from around the globe every year who are willing to work hard and play by the rules. However, as government officials have recently confirmed, several criminal networks are preparing boats to smuggle illegal migrants into countries such as Canada.

Opposition Coalition  Mr. Speaker, the Bloc Québécois and the NDP have confirmed what Canadians have known for a long time, namely that they will try to form a coalition government after the next election. That coalition would be led by, as one can guess, the Liberal leader. The Bloc leader confirmed in his year-end press conference that his party is open to forming a coalition with the Liberals and the NDP.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for his good work on the justice committee and for his intervention on the bill. He referred to the bill as being a fairy tale bill but then he went on to talk about some of the good aspects of the bill. I hope his support of the bill is because of its substance.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Mr. Speaker, the member does good work on the justice committee and I have appreciated his thoughtful approach to these issues. Of course, I profoundly disagree with him and certainly disagree with his characterization of the bill. He has suggested that the bill essentially does not make Canadians safe at all.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Mr. Speaker, I noticed that my colleague, who is on the justice committee, gave guarded support to the bill. One of the reasons was he felt there was much more that could be done to protect victims of crime, especially in the area of fraud. I would not disagree with him. There is so much more we can do to protect Canadians against shysters and fraudsters who prey on the vulnerable.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Madam Speaker, I want to thank my colleague on the justice committee for his intervention. I do appreciate the thoughtful manner in which he articulates his views at the committee, although we often profoundly disagree, the NDP emphasis of course being on the rights of offenders, whereas our Conservative government focuses on the voices of victims and protecting the public against crime.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  --they said, no, we want to put up more speakers; we support the legislation but we want to go on and bash the government for a few hours today. That is my question for the member.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Madam Speaker, I want to put it on the record here, without apology, that we believe that the Liberal Party is opposing or delaying this legislation for partisan purposes. In fact, she as much as admitted that she challenged the ruling of the chair at committee, when she knew that the ruling of the chair was correct.

Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act  Madam Speaker, I rise on a point of order. Madam Speaker, you know that it is unparliamentary for a member of this House to accuse another member of lying. The word “untruth” that has been repeated on numerous occasions by this member is the same as the word “lie”, and I would ask you to take her to task for this.
