Environment committee That would be great. Could you also table by how much they're all overdue, whether it's a year or three years?

Environment committee Thank you. Thanks very much for that.
May 29th, 2014Committee meeting
Megan LeslieNDP
Environment committee Thanks very much. I look forward to that. I wonder, Madam Minister, if your department has done any cost analyses to determine whether it's cheaper to pay out to groups who are forced to take you to court, than it is to actually fund the species at risk. It seems as if there are a lot of court fees being paid here.

Environment committee That's good to hear. Madam Minister, I ask if you would commit to adequately funding the program and clearing the backlog.

Environment committee Great. Thanks. My next question is on the oil and gas regulations—you had to know I'd ask. When will the oil and gas regulations be announced?
May 29th, 2014Committee meeting
Megan LeslieNDP
Environment committee With the time I have left, oil and gas regulations.... We have these targets that we've set—and I brought a handy chart. Here we have the orange line, which is where we're supposed to be. This is our target. The blue line shows our current measures. You can see that we are nowhere near our target.

Environment committee Thanks, Mr. Chair. Madam Minister, welcome back. The last time you actually appeared before this committee, you and I had a bit of a chat afterwards offline. We were talking about the Arctic Council, and you encouraged me to bring forward an idea to study the Arctic Council here at committee.

Megan LeslieNDP
Environment committee We'd love to do a study on it.

Megan LeslieNDP
Environment committee Maybe we'll try to draft—

Environment committee Maybe I'll just try to redraft it.

Environment committee Picking up on this idea of what we need, sometimes groups will come and say, “We don't need anymore studies”, or “We don't need to know the science; we know the science”. Is there anything we can eliminate? What should we not worry about or not focus on? What do we have? Or do we need all of it?
April 3rd, 2014Committee meeting
Megan Leslie
Environment committee We're out of time, I think, Mr. Chair.

Environment committee Thank you to all of the witnesses. This has been really good. Ms. de Leon, I really appreciated the testimony from the Canadian Environmental Law Association, because you had very concrete suggestions, whether it was about changing CEPA about the phosphorus regulations or.... They were really concrete and I appreciated that.

Environment committee Thanks very much. There's a lot to chew on there with the recommendations you made and I look forward to doing that. Madam Conant, I want to continue with the low-hanging fruit theme from earlier. For more complicated and more integrated issues, do we need, for example, studies or action plans?
April 3rd, 2014Committee meeting
Megan Leslie
Environment committee Okay, thanks.
