COVID-19 Protests  Mr. Speaker, I want to be clear about who I stand with. I stand with the health care workers. I am compassionate toward the people who have given so much to us. I denounce the fact that they have been made afraid to walk down the streets. I am compassionate toward the families in Ottawa that want to send their kids to school but have been kept awake all night by people who want to overthrow the government.

COVID-19 Protests  moved: That this House do now adjourn. Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the opportunity to lead the debate. I want to thank my colleague and member of Parliament for New Westminster—Burnaby for the support on this, as well as my entire caucus. People around the world are looking at Canada right now, looking at Ottawa right now, and asking what is happening.

Request for Emergency Debate  Mr. Speaker, I will not be sharing time with her, but I am joined here by my daughter. I want to propose an emergency debate today on the urgent situation facing our country as a consequence of the convoy protests, as well as the general state of the COVID-19 pandemic. I want to outline the impacts we have seen here in Ottawa, specifically on the people of Ottawa.

Human Rights  Mr. Speaker, indigenous, racialized and Black communities are raising a very serious question. When indigenous communities defend their land or when Black or racialized communities protest against police brutality, they receive very different treatment by the police than the convoy in Ottawa.

Human Rights  Madam Speaker, many indigenous community members, racialized community members and Black community members are raising a very serious question. When indigenous land defenders protect their land, their sacred lands, or when racialized people and Black people protest against police brutality that strips communities of loved ones, they receive a very different treatment by the police than the convoy in Ottawa.

Pensions  Mr. Speaker, New Democrats have long been raising the concern that clawbacks to the GIS are impacting vulnerable seniors who cannot pay their bills or pay their rent. We know that the Prime Minister talked about fixing this problem in May, but seniors cannot afford to wait until May.

Health  Mr. Speaker, it is inexcusable that after every wave, our health care system continues to be on the brink of collapse. This is not a surprise. COVID has exposed that our health care system is fragile because of decades of underfunding by federal governments, whether Conservative or Liberal.

Health  Mr. Speaker, the fact is, our health care system is in danger. We need long-term funding increases. That means upping health transfers. It is inexcusable that our health care system continues to be on the brink of collapse every time a new COVID‑19 wave hits. We need more funding now.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, since the beginning of this pandemic, health care workers have been harassed. They have been the subject of verbal assaults. They have been blocked from going to their places of work. Vaccination centres have been shut down. We passed a law to protect health care workers, but it is not being enforced.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the work and the sacrifice of the member for Durham. We disagreed fundamentally on how to help Canadians, but I want to thank him for his service. Since the beginning of this pandemic, our health care workers have been harassed on their way to work.

Transport  Mr. Speaker, there are hundreds of truckers who are stuck at the border between Montana and Alberta because of a convoy of anti-vaccine mandate protesters. I spoke with one of the truckers, Kuldeep Singh, who described the situation. There is no food, no water and no provision for washrooms.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, a recent report highlighted something we already know: Things are getting harder and harder for young families. Things are so bad, there is no way they can buy a house. What is the Prime Minister going to do to fix this situation so young families can buy a house in the community where they want their kids to grow up?

Situation in Ukraine  Mr. Speaker, we have seen that Canada's role in the world has been diminished. Consecutive Conservative and Liberal governments have been cutting our resources, whether it is the diplomatic corps or our peace-keeping roles. If we had that role, we could play a greater partnership in pushing for peace and we could have a greater impact on the global stage, and that is something the New Democrats have continued to push for, increasing our peace keeping and our federal diplomatic corps, so that we can can play that role in pushing for and promoting peace.

Situation in Ukraine  Mr. Speaker, the members in question expressed regret about those comments. I want to be very clear that New Democrats stand in solidarity with Ukraine. We absolutely condemn the actions of Russia. We condemn the illegal occupations that are ongoing. As a further point, my colleague is right to raise concerns about the language.

Situation in Ukraine  Mr. Speaker, I want to make it very clear that New Democrats stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. I know there are so many Ukrainian Canadians, people who come from Ukraine, who have deep ties and deep connections and care deeply about what is going on. They are seeing their relatives and their friends right now living under fear, anxiety and worry about further invasion.
