Environment committee  I'm speaking now, John. Give me the courtesy of articulating what is in the hearts of many of us at this table, and that is about the sham of a process that we're going through. We have many more amendments—you can see them right here—that we still have to go through and that will not be discussed or debated.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  Another project we were very proud of this past summer was being community fire smart. I don't know if you've heard of that, but we're the first community in Quebec, native or non-native, to be fire smart. That's a pretty big feat. We worked in collaboration with our forest fire firefighting agency in Quebec, which is SOPFEU, Société de protection des fôrets contre le feu.

Industry committee  Today, pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), we will be reviewing the main estimates related to the Department of Industry. Today we have with us the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities; John Knubley, Deputy Minister; and David McGovern, Associate Deputy Minister. We're going to get right into it so we don't lose time.

Indigenous Peoples and Canada's Justice System  It is partnerships. For the first time ever, we worked with the former aboriginal affairs minister, John Duncan, for two to three years in our city, and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. The graduation rates for indigenous students in this country are deplorable. What are we going to do? There are two things we can do.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  We were invisible, just as the other Shuswap communities were invisible. We are still invisible today. John Horgan has called in two west coast native people to advise him on the fire in the interior. I have nothing against our west coast people. They are my brothers and sisters. Nonetheless, they weren't anywhere near the fire.

British Home Child Day  After she left her service, Agnes went to work at a hospital in Peterborough and later married John Zavitz. The couple moved back to a farm near Tweed and had five daughters. Agnes died in 1927, shortly after giving birth to Margaret, her only surviving daughter, and so would not have heard people recognizing her.

Fisheries committee  Fairly simply they take native salmon, in this case chum salmon native to the area, the rivers and creeks where they originally spawned, and they take the eggs and implant them into every river and creek that they want those fish to return to. When the salmon get to a certain stage, they go out to the ocean, and they come back to those same rivers and streams when they return to their systems.

Status of Women committee  To help indigenous people access affordable and safe housing in urban areas, for example, the Red Deer Native Friendship Society in Alberta is working with the United Way and the Province of Alberta to build the Asooahum Crossing cultural centre and affordable housing development, a 16-unit multiplex facility.

Agriculture committee  It's interesting that two major energy companies in Alberta are funding that project as a way of reclaiming oil well sites by bringing those native grasslands back. I think that also shows that there is a good diversity of companies and groups that are funding that type of research.

Ed Nelson  Mr. Speaker, I rise today in the House on a sad occasion to commemorate the life of an inspiring Albertan, Ed Nelson, who passed away. A pillar in his community who always fought for the underdog, Mr. Nelson was a legend in Canadian ranching and politics. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II, Ed returned home and was determined to grow Canada's cattle industry and to preserve vital grazing land along the eastern slopes.

Federal Sustainable Development Act  We thought it would take 15 to 20 years before we would start seeing improvements, but just seven years into the initiative, native species that had not bred in the watershed, cold water fish species, were suddenly returning and breeding in parts of the watershed. Real results were happening for the environment. It was improving.

Canadian Heritage committee  He was a chief medical officer in Canada. His findings were published in papers. He is buried there. Duncan Campbell Scott, the leading bureaucrat on the residential schools file for 52 years, the man who refused to implement Dr. Bryce's reforms, is also buried there. Nicholas Flood Davin was the person who wrote the Davin report, which was requisitioned by John A.

British Home Child Day  She came with her sister Sarah, who was only seven years old. The year before, her brother John had made the crossing and had been sent out to western Canada to work, and unfortunately, he was never seen again. Upon arrival, they were sent to a receiving home, in Brockville, known as Fairknowe, where the sisters were split up.

Fisheries committee  Thank you. I thank the committee for allowing me to speak before it here today. I think it's important that I travelled all the way from northwestern B.C. to Ottawa, because I feel that we're left out on the northwest coast of B.C. I say that because a lot of policies and regulations have been put in place without our input.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  We got together and decided we would put the First National Building Officers Association together. At that time we hired John Kiedrowski as our project manager. We're a non-profit organization. We don't get involved in politics at the first nations level or any other. Our association likes to be the odd man out, you might say.
