Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  Madam Speaker, the member and his party are going to oppose this free trade agreement, as they have opposed so many other free trade agreements before, but he mentioned that one of the reasons he is opposing it is because he believes there is a failure to protect labour and the efforts of workers to get proper living conditions and wages.

Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  Mr. Speaker, the hyperbole coming from the member is breathtaking. Canadians have seen why they elected a Conservative government to protect the economy and prosperity of this country and why the NDP has no hope of ever leading Canada. He suggested that our government does not track the figures of our free trade experiences with other countries around the world.

Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  Mr. Speaker, I am very disappointed with the member and the Bloc for not supporting this free trade agreement. Canada is one of the great free trading nations of the world. We heard earlier today that in order to grow our economy to ensure our future prosperity it was critical that we continue to find new trading relationships.

Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank my friend for his support of the Canada-Panama free trade agreement. He is correct in suggesting that Canada, as one of the great free trading nations, needs to develop new trading relationships. Where his argument falls down is the suggestion that previous Liberal governments somehow were able to achieve much more in the area of international trade.

Combating Terrorism Act  Mr. Speaker, I believe the hon. member is referring to preventive detention. The bill contains provisions that allow our authorities to undertake investigations, including detention, to provide them with the opportunity to intervene and question people who may have knowledge about terrorist acts that may be committed.

Combating Terrorism Act  Mr. Speaker, yes, there are safeguards. We looked to the Australian model and the U.K. model. We realized that the period of detention might not necessarily meet with the favour required to pass the legislation. There are provisions that provide for a short period of detention in order to get at the information that our authorities need to prevent terrorist acts from occurring in Canada.

Combating Terrorism Act  First, Mr. Speaker, my colleague from Burnaby—New Westminster has t it all wrong. He seems to think that this measure is one of either we use it or we lose it. Canadians are demanding that we have in place the tools that are necessary to actually get the job done. I am so pleased that we have not had to use this legislation in the past to intervene when there were cases of terrorist activity in Canada.

Combating Terrorism Act  Mr. Speaker, if they have not been jailed, why do we need the census in the first place? This is an attempt by the Liberals to change the channel on this bill, which is about terrorism and getting tough on terrorism and ensuring we have the tools to intervene when there are terrorist acts either being committed, intended to be committed or have already been committed.

Combating Terrorism Act  Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to stand today in support of Bill C-17. It is a bill that seeks to reinstate the investigative hearing and recognizance provisions that were created in the Criminal Code by the Anti-terrorism Act in 2001. That was in the wake of 9/11. The investigative hearing provisions gave a judge the power, on application by a peace officer and with the prior approval of the attorney general, to compel a person to attend at court to be asked questions about a past or future terrorism offence.

Combating Terrorism Act  Madam Speaker, I have listened all afternoon to these kinds of tirades about the safety of this country. As we know, Canada faces the very real threat of terrorism, as does the rest of the world. Yet, I hear a Bloc member saying that this legislation, which is intended to renew previous legislation passed by a previous Liberal government, is useless.

Firearms Registry  Mr. Speaker, the summer is over and this week we vote on whether to scrap the costly and ineffective long gun registry. No longer can the NDP and Liberal MPs hide by saying one thing in their ridings and quite another thing when they are in Ottawa. Let us take the NDP leader. After promising to allow a free vote, he is now secretly trying to force 12 of his MPs to vote to keep the $1 billion registry rather than do the right thing and listen to their constituents.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police  Mr. Speaker, our Conservative government continues to reform and strengthen our national police force. We are giving the RCMP the tools it needs to protect the security of Canadians while ensuring at the same time that appropriate accountability mechanisms are in place. Our recent 2010 budget reaffirmed our government's promise to strengthen the RCMP civilian review process by providing funding to improve how complaints are investigated.
