Foreign Affairs committee  Over a span of four years, I've been able to assess a series of trends and Canada's adjustment to these changing times. There is a constant in these studies: the lack of a real Canadian policy towards Asia beyond platitudes along the lines of its being “an important region for Canada”. I'm not exaggerating by much. Given the high quality of the previous presentation by a very informed expert, I will focus more on the security dimension, but I will also start with some commonplace remarks that we've noted over the last 10 years.

The Budget  Madam Speaker, if the member reads the fine print of the budget, he would note that in fact the CPP changes will not kick in for another 50 years. I suspect that I will be dead by then. Notwithstanding that, for real Canadians who need that help today, it is not going to happen for them. I invite the member to come to Vancouver East and walk the streets. I will take him to Downtown Eastside to see the people who are homeless today in our communities.

Let's Talk Science  That is why, today, I would like to recognize the good work of Let's Talk Science, a national organization in my riding of London West. Let's Talk Science gives youth the opportunity to see into the lives of real Canadians working in science, technology, engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM. They have 3,500 student volunteers at 45 universities and colleges across Canada, and over 60% of them are women.

Health  Speaker, I thank my colleague for her question and for her interest in this issue which is, as she mentioned, a real Canadian public health crisis. The figures remain chilling, as the number of opioid-related deaths continues to rise. This crisis represents a new type of public health challenge for Canada.

Budget Implementation Act, 2017, No. 2  They voted against it. Why is their voting record so bad when it comes to representing real Canadians?

Criminal Code  We have all heard the expression, in Toronto particularly, “driving while black”. This is a real issue. It affects real Canadians. Reasonable suspicion requires just that. That is what the law says now. If we are now giving the police these new powers to pull someone over on a whim, then obviously, we have a right to be concerned.

Natural Resources  Just last month, 350 families at General Electric in Peterborough, a factory operating since 1892, have lost their jobs as a result of new regulatory hurdles and mounting uncertainty, uncertainty the Liberals alone have caused. When will the Liberals realize their risky delays are affecting real Canadians with real jobs?

Invictus Games  Ultimately, what counts is the spirit of the games. These men and women and their families are the real Canadian heroes. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Business of Supply  I cannot conclude my remarks without mentioning the fact that, last Friday, we, the five Conservative members for Quebec, spoke out on behalf of Quebec business owners. We held a meeting, and it was very moving to hear from real Canadians, real business owners, and real job creators who are completely disgusted by the Liberal government's attitude. Thirty-six-year-old Steeve Marin started his company 15 years ago with the support and backing of some of his colleagues.

Taxation  Perhaps the Prime Minister looked at himself in the mirror in the morning before he said that, but the reality is that for real Canadian entrepreneurs, for small business owners who support hundreds of thousands of Canadians, it is arrogance, it is contempt. Why does the current government have so much contempt for our Canadian entrepreneurs, who are creating real jobs?

Health committee  Zubek, I have a couple of quotes here from you—and you mentioned this in your presentations—about the outdated guidelines. You also urged the Minister of Health to reject the framework and insist on a real Canadian action plan for Lyme disease. This needs to be created in partnership with people who are affected by Lyme. With respect to the guidelines, obviously the guidelines are insufficient because you can only prescribe so much antibiotic before you're not allowed to anymore.

Procedure and House Affairs committee  Assuming there is this real Canadian connection in the example you gave, depending on the facts of the case, you could possibly investigate and lay charges against the Canadian outfit or enterprise that did that on the basis that they became party to the offence committed by the Chinese company, again, using your example.

Canadian Foreign Policy  A popular criticism today of the arguments I am making here is that all such ideas are abstract, perhaps of interest to the so-called Laurentian elite, or the media or the Ottawa bubble, but not at all relevant to real Canadians. That line of reasoning is the ultimate elite condescension; it is nonsense. In reply, I offer the example of my grandfather, John Wilbur Freeland. He was born in Peace River, Alberta, the son of a pioneer family.

Health committee  This is, frankly, ridiculous. I urge the Minister of Health to reject the Draft Framework and insist on a real Canadian action plan for Lyme disease. This needs to be created in partnership with people affected by Lyme and those researchers and doctors who are actively attempting to treat them. Finally, these are the words of Rossana Magnotta, a director of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation: We call on the Minister of Health to intervene and insist on patient experts being involved in the writing of the framework, even if that means delaying the report to parliament.

Budget Implementation Act, 2017, No. 1  What happened to the election promise to draw, from all circumstances of a veteran's case and all the evidence presented to the government, every reasonable inference in favour of the applicant? Warrant Officer Perreault and other Afghanistan veterans are the real Canadian heroes. Let us start treating them like heroes. Budget 2016 marked the beginning of a second Liberal era of darkness for Canada's women and men in the Canadian Armed Forces. The decision to relocate or re-profile—which is Liberalspeak for cut—$8.5 billion in defence allocations in budget 2017, in addition to the previous cuts, confirms the worst fears of our women and men in uniform.
