Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, this government has underestimated the scale and ambition of China and its Trojan Horse opportunism for too long. China's counter-espionage law says that in any case the CCP deems relevant, organizations and individuals must provide espionage evidence truthfully. They may not refuse.

Judges Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for his speech and his support of this very important bill. I want to give my personal thanks to the Hon. Rona Ambrose for the work that she did in the last Parliament. Now we are dealing with this again in this Parliament. I have an organization in my riding, SACE, the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, that has been desperately waiting for this legislation to be passed.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, Canada is the only Five Eyes member to neither ban nor restrict the use of Huawei 5G equipment. Why are we allowing the Chinese government to bully and intimidate our country in a brute force attempt to potentially surrender our citizens' data, privacy and security?

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, the EU's general data protection regulation mandates that all business activities by Huawei meet its requirements. This allowed it to rule that Huawei was in breach of a European privacy law when it failed to comply with the request to provide the data it kept on EU citizens.

Agriculture and Agri-Food  Mr. Speaker, the industry minister is responsible for the Competition Act. He knows that. It is up to the federal government to protect consumers and farmers from the unfair fees being imposed by Walmart, Metro and others. Instead, the government wants to pass the buck to the provinces.

Agriculture and Agri-Food  Mr. Speaker, the key word there was “generally”. The one industry that did not experience a slowdown during COVID-19 was the grocery sector. Many of these big chains saw record profits as Canadians prepared to lock down during the past spring. As the Greater Toronto Area, Quebec and now Winnipeg are going through a second wave of lockdowns, more Canadians are worried about their next meal.

Oil Tanker Moratorium Act  Mr. Speaker, I would tell the member that that is not what Albertans think. They do not think that way because the Liberal government continues to bring in legislation that is punitive to the province and comes into a jurisdiction that very much affects that province. The member used the example of Trans Mountain, which is not a deepwater port.

Oil Tanker Moratorium Act  Mr. Speaker, the energy industry within Canada is one of the most regulated industries in the world. We have regulations in place that are solid, and companies are following them. As I mentioned in my speech, companies are innovating. They are working hard to reduce emissions in this tough environment.

Oil Tanker Moratorium Act  Mr. Speaker, I guess the same question could have been asked of the government. Did it reach out to all of the other indigenous groups that supported pipeline development, which needs deepwater ports to get access to markets? I believe that there has to be consultation. However, consultation would be broad-based and would look at the lives and livelihoods of many people across Canada, which is what I certainly know our government would do.

Oil Tanker Moratorium Act  Mr. Speaker, the energy sector is a big player in all of the markets, including manufacturing in Ontario, and throughout the country, whether it be pipe that is being put in the ground or some of the byproducts that are produced by the energy sector. This is an incredibly important sector for the country, not just for Alberta or Saskatchewan.

Oil Tanker Moratorium Act  moved that Bill C-229, An Act to repeal certain restrictions on shipping, be read the second time and referred to a committee. Mr. Speaker, I stand today to speak to my private member's bill, Bill C-229, which I think frames a very, very important issue for our country. On June 21, 2019, the Liberals celebrated victory in the passing of Bill C-48 in this chamber.

Housing  Madam Speaker, Edmonton's token funding allocation for rapid housing shows how little the Liberal government knows about the realities on the ground. Alberta is experiencing an economic downturn like it has never seen before. Homelessness is on the rise, with camps forming in multiple locations; drug-related fatalities are soaring; and there is a growing mental health crisis.

Natural Resources  Mr. Speaker, another Alberta company, a frac sand company, was forced to lay off nearly its entire staff. The government is approving $20 million in loans to a competing company that mines exclusively in the U.S.: a loan with interest that can be paid back in kind. When the government interferes like this, it is directly picking winners and losers, forcing yet another mass layoff in the energy sector.

Natural Resources  Mr. Speaker, Come By Chance refinery has shut down, there are Suncor layoffs, the White Rose oil field is in jeopardy, there are Husky layoffs and it is now being sold. The government has left energy workers out in the cold. News broke yesterday that the steelworkers union is putting more energy into finding a buyer for Come By Chance than the natural resources minister is.
