The Economy  I do not think we want to do that in this country. They want to raise business taxes and put in a carbon tax. That is not the way to secure a recovery, and that is what we are seeing. The economic action plan is working. Lower taxes for Canadian families and businesses is working and April's record job numbers prove it.

The Economy  That is why since forming government we have reduced taxes for families, seniors, students and businesses. The Liberal Party thinks Canadians should pay more, a higher GST, a new carbon tax and hikes to business taxes, a move experts have said will kill jobs. We need only look at the facts to know which plan will have better success. Canada has created 285,000 new jobs since last July, including a record number of job gains last month.

Carbon Tax  Speaker, last week in Edmonton the Liberal leader continued his attempts to hide from the Liberal carbon tax. Too bad that the carbon tax was the Liberal leader's idea. He first advocated it as part of his 2006 leadership campaign. He said that we needed to “put a price on carbon” and that we have to burden other Canadians who are able to bear energy costs.

Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada  So far, the only answer the Liberal leader has given is that he will hike job-killing business taxes, raise the GST and bring back the carbon tax. It is becoming clearer by the day that Canadians just cannot afford the tax and spend policies of the Liberal leader.

Liberal Party of Canada  Will he promote the Liberals' support for the long gun registry? Will he preach the virtues of a Liberal carbon tax? Will he tell Albertans about the Liberals' shutting the door forever to unilingual Canadians from serving their country on the Supreme Court? We would not be surprised. The member for Papineau already thinks unilingual Canadians are lazy.

Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada  Avoiding mentioning the economy is a deliberate strategy for the Liberal leader, since Canadians know of his plan to raise taxes. Whether it is proposing a GST hike, promoting a carbon tax or proposing job-killing business taxes, raising taxes is the only policy the Liberal leader is consistent on. Whereas the Liberal leader threatens our economy, our government is taking action to improve our economy through year two of Canada's economic action plan.

Taxation  In fact, the Liberal finance critic said, “The era of tax cuts is over”. His leader promises a GST increase, a new carbon tax and higher job-killing business taxes. Under the Liberal leader's tax and spend plan, Canadians will suffer and see their tax bills dramatically increase. Not us. We will ensure Canadians keep all their money—

Climate Change Accountability Act  I do not know if the hon. member remembers, but at that time, the Conservative opposition said that was a carbon tax and it was going to defeat the government for putting greenhouse gases under CEPA. I think the NDP was toying with joining the Conservatives and defeating the government on that, but I cannot recall for sure.

Industry  Mr. Speaker, the Liberal leader has attempted to distance himself from the Liberal carbon tax agenda, but his own record tells a very different story. In fact, during his leadership campaign in 2006, he invented the Liberal carbon tax agenda. Seven months ago, he actually convinced his former leader to make a job-killing carbon tax the centrepiece of the Liberal election campaign.

Agriculture and Agri-Food  All the noise from the member for Malpeque about agriculture would certainly be shadowed by a carbon tax that his party wants to bring in.

Agriculture committee  The issues are land, labour, the price of machinery and construction materials, cost of living, fuel costs, plants, feed, transportation, and carbon tax. I'm sure you've heard over and over again about land costs. As a young farmer, why would you go into farming if you have to pay $100,000 an acre and basically lose it after a while?

Agriculture committee  Unless we can get the same cost structure as our competitors...which we can't, because our land is more expensive, our drugs are more expensive, everything we do is far more expensive, not to mention the 7% carbon tax on a $10,000 fuel bill here. We can't have it at both ends. We can't be getting taxed into the ground and getting no money back. It just does not work. It's going to kill... Well, I'm double Doug's age, and I don't see much of a future for young folks, unfortunately.

Natural Resources committee  That policy will have to encompass some element of carbon pricing, however that's chosen, whether that's through a mechanism like a carbon tax, or a mechanism like a cap and trade, or some other mechanism. Frankly, as industry, we're somewhat agnostic on that, but absolutely, having a well-understood expectation of the future of carbon constraints is going to be important to developing these projects.

Stephen Kaufman

Natural Resources committee  We're pretty aware of the solutions we need, including some form of carbon pricing. Frankly, I'm agnostic whether it's through cap and trade or some form of carbon tax. We need carbon pricing and we need it soon. As to your question of fairness across the provinces, I'll speak from my perspective in Alberta. CO2 knows no boundaries. I agree that the polluter pays principle should apply.

Taxation  Just yesterday the Liberal finance critic stated his intention to raise taxes. Let the era of Liberal tax hikes begin, everything from hiking the GST, imposing a carbon tax and increasing job-killing business taxes. While the Liberals scheme about new taxes and killing jobs, our Conservative government is focused on the economy and Canada's economic action plan, a plan that is working.
