Agriculture committee  Do you think the government is well set up to do that?

Agriculture committee  Perhaps one other question would be.... You gave some good examples of where agri-products are involved in a final product that we might not normally assume, like in foam seats, etc. If the government were involved in this key step of moving something from the research lab to the market, how would one differentiate between all the different types of products and what actually has agri-content and what has less agri-content?

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Chair. I want to ask Mr. Smardon a couple of questions. First of all, I liked your presentation because it focuses on a key step whereby you move research that we develop in labs to the market. It's unfortunately a high-risk endeavour. In fact, this is where venture capitalism comes in—people who are willing to take a lot of risk, because for every 100 products that look really good, a small number actually become successfully marketed to consumers or to industries and eventually to consumers.

Agriculture committee  Yes, I will read it, Chair. I would put forward that Mr. Atamanenko's motion be amended by deleting all the words after “indicate” and replacing them with: to the World Trade Organization that Canada will continue our strong support for supply-managed sectors and that any decisions regarding the future of Canada's state trading enterprises will be made domestically and that Canada will continue to push for new opportunities for Canadian agricultural exporters by advocating the elimination of export subsidies and removal of trade barriers.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Chair. Mexico has also agreed to include older animals for export, and they have since lifted the temporary restrictions on breeding stock imports from Alberta. We continue to work on outstanding issues to restore full access for beef and to take advantage of market opportunities for other products.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Chair. I think Mr. Atamanenko was just referring to a discussion he and I had the other day regarding an amendment. First of all, supply management is of paramount importance to Canadians, and I think to people on this committee. Supply management has created jobs, prosperity for Canadians for the past 40 years, and it continues to create prosperity in our rural communities and in our urban centres.

Agriculture committee  Thank you very much, Chair. Regarding committee business, Mr. Atamanenko asked the committee to consider allowing him to swap his two motions. We have a number of motions in front of the committee. His first motion deals with the AgriFlexibility program. The other one deals with supply management.

Agriculture committee  Just given the witnesses we had before, there seems to be confusion. First of all, are these standards of one part per million or two parts per million actually hard and fast standards, enforceable standards upon which grain can be rejected? Secondly, on enforcement, is it that this not been enforced very much before and all of a sudden it's being enforced now?

October 20th, 2009Committee meeting

Agriculture committee  Hold on. I think there is confusion here. Mr. Bellavance wants to bring his motion forward and he is talking about bringing other motions forward. If Mr. Bellavance wants to bring just his motion forward, then that can be up for discussion, and we can see whether there is consent for that.
