Canadian Heritage committee  Madam Chair, it's interesting. When I was growing up, I went out and bought—I'm not going to say an eight-track—

Canadian Heritage committee  —but cassettes, and CDs, and so on. But it was easy to track. There was a means where the artist could say, “Yes, last week I sold x number of CDs. Where's my revenue, my remuneration?” My children grew up in a digital age. They're getting stuff from wherever. There are grey area markets.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. Thank you, guys, for coming in today. I want to speak a little bit on gaming. When my children were growing up, we bought the machine and the program, and that was it and they played all they wanted. The new platform is concerning for grandparents, as I am, in that your grandson or granddaughter phones you and wants a gift card.

Canadian Heritage committee  No, but it seems like your industry is doing very well. It's always changing. It's harder for people to pirate. You don't want to lose your spot because you gain all this stuff. I don't think you guys have a big issue, from my perspective. Are there any problems with piracy? I can't see it.

Canadian Heritage committee  What's in your favour is the voice and video interaction during the game. I'll be watching my grandson, and all of a sudden his friend appears there and they're networking back and forth.

Canadian Heritage committee  I think those mechanisms alleviated a lot of the issues with piracy, because everybody is connected somehow, so I don't think a pirated copy would work.

Canadian Heritage committee  As technology is changing.... But the music industry hasn't really changed. It's from whatever apparatus you have. There's no interaction. It's just enjoying the music. Is there technology out there to protect...? You can download anything you want in the greynet, I call it. You can get pirated music anywhere and it's no different from what you get from a paid service.

Canadian Heritage committee  Okay, I'll be quick. Who controls the value gap at this point? Should the government be controlling who gets what or do we let private industry control that?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair; and thank you to the witnesses. Mr. Gladue, thank you for your service for our country. I believe you served in the Canadian Forces. We really appreciate that. Mr. Oliver, thank you for joining us. My first question is to Mr. Gladue. Can you describe the challenges you face in your journey to repatriate a number of artifacts that you discovered in the Royal Alberta Museum?

Canadian Heritage committee  You also mentioned grassroots in one of your statements. Going forward with this national action plan, how do you foresee the stakeholders being spread out? Who should be the stakeholders in this conversation?

Canadian Heritage committee  Mr. Gladue, in your first meeting with the museum, was there any push-back? Was there willingness, like “Yes, let's do something, and we'll talk?” How was that first meeting?

Canadian Heritage committee  Mr. Gladue, there is also a concern that a lot of these artifacts are very sensitive to light or humidity and need special care. Moving forward, everyone wants to see the first nations and all the indigenous and aboriginal people, Inuit...I think I covered all of them.

Canadian Heritage committee  Yes, I said Métis. I don't want to leave anyone out. However, regarding the infrastructure and the money that goes with that, can a lot of the groups manage it all without federal or provincial help?

October 2nd, 2018Committee meeting

David Yurdiga

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Mr. Gladue. Mr. Oliver, you mentioned education providing first nations with the ability to understand the artifacts they are getting and how to maintain them and care for them. How widespread is that training? This is the first time I've heard of the training that's provided.
