Natural Resources committee  Thank you very much.

May 29th, 2018Committee meeting

Bill Eggertson

Natural Resources committee  I think there are a number of unintended consequences occurring as a result of the people's desire to do the right thing. I can use a case study of ground-source heat pumps. You can either upgrade the efficiency of your natural gas furnace or you can install a ground-source heat

Natural Resources committee  To respond to your question, it's disadvantageous. The more people who are involved in the collection, the better the final output will be. How you politically or legally do that becomes a problem. I have concerns about the U.S. data. It's not quite as solid as I used to suspec

Natural Resources committee  Collection of data does become a bit problematic in terms of company confidential information. There are ways of doing it. As I mentioned, the EIA in the United States does a fair amount, and industry complains. I was involved with the ground-source heat-pump industry down there,

Natural Resources committee  In speaking from the private sector, yes, being arm's length from government is absolutely crucial. We've seen what's happening in the United States under the current administration. Data can be massaged, perhaps in the wrong way. It's having an arm's-length, very neutral body—

Natural Resources committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Members of the committee, good morning. Energy data have been a focus of mine since 1985, when I was hired to manage the Solar Energy Society of Canada, Inc. after the federal government terminated funding for renewables at the National Research Council.

Natural Resources committee  —based on my earlier commentary or on testimony that you have heard from prior witnesses. One, data on energy production or consumption should be accompanied by details on its end use. In other words, how is that energy used? A tabular column with this information would allow ea

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  Your point about a grid being necessary is very important, which is why district heating works extremely well. District heating is the same as an electric grid. We do worry about the source of the electricity if a B.C. line from BC Hydro goes up and covers most of the Arctic, b

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  That is a valid criticism of renewable electricity. You are correct. If you need 50 megawatts for community X, you can put in 50 megawatts of wind turbines or 50 megawatts of solar, but you still actually have to have 50 megawatts of gas generation backup.

May 11th, 2010Committee meeting

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  Yes, it is, or you tell people to stop using power. You can use certain measures to do it, but the trick is that yes, you have to build the 50 megawatt gas generating station. You have to have the tanks of gas ready to go. Hopefully you'll never use them, or you'll use them very

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  I'll make two very quick responses. Energy from waste is very much an energy source. The City of Ottawa has a major plant in which they are trying to divert as much of their garbage as they can to the generation of electricity. It is receiving a renewable energy subsidy from the

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  Pardon me if I speak quickly. Differentiate between power, electricity, and heat. Geothermal heat pumps only provide heat.

May 11th, 2010Committee meeting

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  You were talking about wind at utility scale. I was talking about wind at individual scale—basically putting a 700-watt wind turbine on your house to power a 12-volt battery.

May 11th, 2010Committee meeting

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  There are different markets, and geothermal is not easy to maintain, but once it's installed properly, it should be good for a long time.

May 11th, 2010Committee meeting

Bill Eggertson

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  Oui. Specifically with reference to wind turbines, there are now units that have heating coils in the nacelleand in the blades and in all of the parts that used to freeze up. You are using some of the electricity that you're generating to power electric coil resistance heating to
