Okimaw Ohci in Saskatchewan is a healing lodge designated specifically for aboriginal women who have had horrible experiences and who really want to follow a healing path and reconnect with their culture and go back to the community in a good way.

Special Committee on Indigenous Women committee  In actual fact, it's a smaller number than that. We have one completed safety plan, and we have five in the works. We have done community mobilization in 25 communities that are gearing up and getting themselves organized and developing a community vision to move forward. We've trained 190 people to be either community facilitators or community champions to work in their communities.

Special Committee on Indigenous Women committee  Because we're new. This is an initiative that just started in 2010. We need the buy-in of leadership before we will go into a community, and sometimes that takes time.

Special Committee on Indigenous Women committee  We need buy-in from aboriginal leadership in aboriginal communities before we go in and work with those communities. When we started doing this work, they didn't know what we were doing and they didn't know what it was about. We would send them a letter and it would be filed. Now we've gained a little bit of momentum and people are dusting off those letters and saying, “Can we still engage with you?”
