Canadian Heritage committee We've talked a little bit about demographics. I just want to know about the rural and urban split. Obviously, there is faster Internet. Is there any difference between rural viewing habits of traditional cable or streaming services? Do you have any data on that, or even a comment in any way?

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you, Madam Chair. We were talking about having a broad definition, and I understand that, but it hasn't worked well for the Métis settlements. When the officials were here, we talked about Métis settlements, and all of a sudden we heard, “Oh, we contacted the Métis nation”; well, they're separate, so they were excluded.

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you, Madam Chair. I have this amendment in here because there's confusion between Métis nation and settlements. Settlements are land-based and have their own governing body. They are unique and separate. The Métis nation is a society, and settlements are governing bodies.

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you, Madam Chair. I'd like to thank everyone for coming today. Over this process, I've learned a lot. I do have family who are first nations and everything else, but you really grasp how serious this is when you go from coast to coast to coast. We see young people moving to the cities, becoming more urban.

Canadian Heritage committee My next question is to Chief Antoine. In your community, what are the challenges? Are the young people starting to want to learn our culture, our language? I ask because I know that according to statistics, the number of fluent speakers has been going down for a time. What initiatives have you put in place to ensure that in the future there will be more Dene speakers in your community?

Canadian Heritage committee You can't have one policy that fits everyone, so we have to go back to the drawing board and ask about what they need. One community may need something different from another. I think it should go back to the various communities across Canada from coast to coast to coast. As well, we should get a proposal: “This is what we need, and we need x dollars to accomplish this”, and then the discussion could go from there.

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you, Madam Chair. I'd like to thank the witnesses for making the journey to testify to us. During one of the first meetings, we had the bureaucracy in, and they referred to it extensive consultation. Some of the questions we asked were on who was consulted. I come from the Lac La Biche area, where we have the Kikino and Buffalo Lake Métis settlements, so I knew that wasn't true.

Canadian Heritage committee The Metis Settlements are unique in themselves, because they have their own infrastructure in place to actually provide programming.

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you. I know a lot of Métis organizations have access to the digital platform more so than some of these settlements, which have difficulty even getting Internet service. They get basic, but it's really hard to function. Moving forward, how important do you believe it is to have access to adequate cell coverage or Internet coverage?

Canadian Heritage committee Thank you, Madam Chair. I'd like to thank everyone for coming here today. Your testimony is very important. I'd like to say that I'm very impressed by the native friendship centres in my riding and also by your organization. I have three, one in each of Fort McMurray, Lac La Biche and Cold Lake.
