Health committee  If I may, in the past, historically, the provinces of Alberta and B.C. had legislation specifically regarding sterilization of individuals with, for example, mental illness. That was in the twenties, thirties and all the way up to the seventies. Those kinds of practices were very troubling, the fact that individuals with mental illnesses were targeted as a group to undergo tubal ligation and sterilization procedures.

Health committee  In addition to the excellent comment by my colleague Abby, there are ethnocultural barriers and linguistic barriers. When someone doesn't quite understand what's being explained to them, I think that's a really important aspect that one needs to consider as you optimize...to make sure that the patient understands everything that's being presented, including alternatives, risks and benefits.
