Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. My question is for Dr. Gaudreault, from the Collège des médecins du Québec. Could you tell the committee whether the CMQ already has some sort of rule framework in place to oversee the delivery of MAID by members of the college to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental disorder?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Has the college set up or implemented any rules to oversee members who provide MAID to individuals whose sole underlying condition is a mental disorder, or is the college planning any such framework?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Does Quebec have a specific group or groups that provide support for MAID in that circumstance, in other words, for individuals with mental disorders?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  If I understand correctly, you do trust your colleagues to assess the risk of suicide. It already says in black and white that someone in a state of suicidal crisis is not eligible for MAID. It says that clearly, and it's stated over and over again. What do you think of people who provide MAID to a person in crisis?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Dr. Sareen, I have just a quick question for you. In your opening statement, you said that if MAID were made available, it would lead to many unnecessary deaths. Is the availability of MAID and eligibility for MAID the same thing, in your eyes?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  I thought I heard someone ask about how long the needs assessment is. Having experience in professional development, I'd like to ask Dr. Green or Ms. Campbell a question. How will the length of the needs assessment affect the training modules you're putting together? Is there a difference between ongoing professional development and MAID training with respect to the needs assessment?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Sorry to cut you off, but I just heard some questions around the table. Does the length of the needs assessment affect how you design the modules? I wouldn't think so, because a needs assessment is time limited. Nevertheless, is there a difference between a needs assessment as part of ongoing professional development and a MAID needs assessment?

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. My question is for Ms. Downie and Ms. Voisin. Generally speaking, people are uneasy, even those around the table. There seems to be a sense that making MAID available to people with mental health issues is like having an open bar that everyone can take advantage of.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. My question is for Dr. Gupta and Dr. Gamache, and I'd like brief answers. Last year, a psychiatrist appeared before our committee. On the subject of an individual's eligibility for MAID, she said there were so many important criteria to consider that, out of all the cases she had seen in 30 years of practice, she had encountered only three people who were eligible, given the long-term treatment, chronic disease, and so on.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you. I think what I've been hearing is that, until all psychiatrists have the training to participate in MAID, we won't be ready. However, there are lots of family physicians and health professionals, and they don't all participate. What are your thoughts on that as far as psychiatrists go?
