Questions on the Order Paper November 22nd, 2013

Mr. Speaker, CSC does not formally track information pertaining to federal offenders who may have served in the Canadian Forces and in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. As a result, a manual case-by-case review would be required in order to accurately respond, and this cannot be completed within the time frame provided.

Firearms Registry November 21st, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague from Medicine Hat, Alberta, for her excellent question.

We accept the Supreme Court's decision, and we will continue to put in place measures to make our streets safer. We will also respect our hunters, farmers and sports shooters.

We will vigorously defend our legislation, which was passed by the elected members of this Parliament and the Supreme Court.

Citizenship and Immigration November 18th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague for her question. I have had the opportunity to discuss this with her and I will let her know as soon as I receive an update on this case.

As we all know, Canada accepts more than 250,000 immigrants, and those who do not meet the proper requirements must be returned to their country of origin with all of the necessary assurances regarding health and safety.

Public Safety November 5th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Westlock—St. Paul for his question.

He is right. In Donnacona, Millhaven and Collins Bay, I have been able to see the work our correctional officers do.

Let me also state that double-bunking is a completely normal practice use in many western countries and studies, including a Canadian one, show that it has no impact upon the rate of violence in prison.

Our Conservative government strongly disagrees with the NDP. We strongly believe that double-bunking is totally appropriate for convicted criminals.

Citizenship and Immigration November 4th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I would like to reassure the hon. member.

There are professionals in place to ensure that the immigration system is working properly. That is why we welcome more than 250,000 new immigrants to Canada every year. Obviously, people who come here must obey our laws. No one is above the law. I can assure my colleague that professionals make sure that the people who come here are treated well. Nonetheless, if they do not obey the law, they will be returned to their country of origin.

Correctional Service Canada November 4th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, to begin, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the remarkable work being done by our correctional officers. Their work is important. They keep criminals, people who are a threat to society, behind bars. We will continue to support them.

Public Safety October 29th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the Tamil Tigers have been listed as a terrorist organization since 2006 because of their involvement in violent extremism. I am shocked that the NDP member for Toronto—Danforth would take steps to lighten the sentence of a convicted terrorist who was involved in his election campaign.

It is time for the NDP leader to take responsibility. He needs to rein in the member for Toronto—Danforth and take disciplinary action.

Combating Counterfeit Products Act October 28th, 2013

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-8, An Act to amend the Copyright Act and the Trade-marks Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to the special order made previously, I would like to inform the House that this bill is in the same form as Bill C-56 was in the previous session at the time of prorogation.

(Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed.)

Public Safety October 21st, 2013

Mr. Speaker, indeed I am very pleased that my colleague noted this important measure in the government's throne speech.

As a government for Canada and the provinces, we have a responsibility to take action in anticipation of natural disasters. That is why we intend to put forward an infrastructure program to reduce and mitigate the impacts of disasters.

Natural Resources October 21st, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I would like to remind my hon. colleague that the protests he is referring to concern shale gas, which is a provincial jurisdiction.

All Canadians enjoy the right to demonstrate peacefully. However, you can rest assured that in the presence of improvised explosive devices, burnt out cars and illegal firearms, we will protect Canadians and ensure that people are held responsible under the law.
