Understand that port authorities have an obligation, through the Canada Marine Act, to engage with communities, including first nations, on the impacts of their activity. The port of Vancouver, like many ports, is a major metropolitan area with competing interests on land. Our approach with both communities and first nations has been to engage with them on an ongoing basis to create a rapport such that, when opportunities arise for us to grow Canada's trade, those relationships are hopefully good, or at least established, so the conversation isn't viewed as transactional.
