How can we improve working conditions for artists and increase resources for access to the arts amid this constant pressure? This question raises the crucial concept of intergenerational equity. As a passing of the torch takes place in our community, new voices carrying a renewed vision of artistic creation are emerging. How can we enable this next generation to flourish and become a lasting part of our ecosystem?
So today, the question is not just where the artists of tomorrow will create, but how people will be able to become and remain artists. We need to consider how creative and performing arts institutions can support project-based theatre companies and emerging artists.
In our view, spaces for creation and performance should be thought of as living infrastructure that serves an ecosystem. To achieve this, we believe three recommendations are essential: strengthening the social safety net, providing better funding for the Canada Council for the Arts, and adopting an equitable territorial vision in all funding for culture and within the build communities strong fund.
To effectively support the next generation of artists and promote our culture, we need to shift our mindset. Creative spaces are not just places to be preserved; they are also strategic tools for building a strong, resilient and sustainable artistic ecosystem.
