One of the consequences is a loss of competitiveness in international markets. Already, if we look at agriculture and agri-food as a share of the gross domestic product, Canada invests 50% less in public and private research than other comparable countries, such as the member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development or our neighbour to the south. These cuts will undermine the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture in the markets. So we'll be taking a step backward instead of moving forward.
