We'll call the meeting to order. We will stay in public because we have one election to run. I will turn it over to our clerk because she must preside over those.

The Clerk of the Committee Ms. Michelle Tittley

Hello.

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the first vice-chair must be a member of the official opposition.

I am now prepared to receive motions for the election of the first vice-chair.

Exactly. I want to know, are we going to be making the right choice? I don't know. What's her platform? What does she plan to do in case you're not here, Joe?

And what is your position on the egg salad sandwiches?

11:05 a.m.

Some hon. members

Oh, oh!

The Chair Conservative Joe Preston

That's a crucial one to know. I've got to have a vice-chair who will support me.

Good. She's already making promises.

Good. Two vice-chairs.

Somebody who will campaign for better coffee will have my vote.

Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?

(Motion agreed to)

I declare the motion carried and Madame Latendresse duly elected as first vice-chair.

Excellent. Now we've got a good working committee.

We're moving on. We have committee business, so with the permission of the committee we'll go in camera now. Do I have to suspend to go in camera?

Do you have another thing?

I think—correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll defer to the clerk on this one—we have to present a motion to appoint a chair of the Subcommittee on Private Members' Business.

The Chair Conservative Joe Preston

I'm willing to accept a motion.

I move that, pursuant to Standing Order 91.1(1), Mr. Dave MacKenzie be appointed chair of the subcommittee.

The Chair Conservative Joe Preston

All right. Mr. MacKenzie used to sit with us.

For those of you who don't know, Harold used to be the chair. Harold will not be chairing the committee any more. He's stepping down; it's too much for him.

Some hon. members

Oh, oh!

Tom Lukiwski Conservative Regina—Lumsden—Lake Centre, SK

From our side, it has to be a government member, so we're putting Mr. MacKenzie's name forward.

The committee deals with all private members' bills that come forward, to determine whether they're votable or non-votable.

The Chair Conservative Joe Preston

Is there approval of that motion by the committee?

(Motion agreed to)

I'm seeing all in favour. Great, that's unanimous.

Now I will suspend just for a moment while we go in camera to discuss our report.

[Proceedings continue in camera]
