When we talk about electrification, we're talking about a couple of different moves on the path to sustainable transportation.
I'll give the example of a telecom company in Quebec. These are the folks who come in vans to fix your Internet. They've benefited from the Ford E-Transit, which is a low-cost electric van. A lot of their technicians do short routes during the day, and 40% of their fuel costs are from idling. That means when the technicians are sitting and having lunch, they are running the vehicles and burning fossil fuels, of course, and sitting in our neighbourhoods causing tailpipe pollution. When they switch to an electric vehicle, during that idle time, they usually use the high-voltage battery and sit comfortably in an air-conditioned or heated cabin.
That company has said that by reducing their fleet of combustion vehicles and by right-sizing and significantly electrifying—I believe they have upwards of 200 electric vehicles in their fleet at this point—they have saved, back of the napkin, half a million dollars over five years. That's not insignificant.
