It was reduced, but in the criminal case, he was sentenced to prison for 13 years. So it was not a very big reduction, after the sentence to five years in prison! Without going into the separate statutes, if someone is liable to imprisonment for five years or more, they are entitled to trial by jury. Certainly if other offences are committed and there is a criminal record, the sentences will go up, because the criminal record is an aggravating factor. When there is a single transaction, although there may be several counts, I think there should not be concurrent sentences.
