Insofar as the government's policies and laws are concerned, the designation does not lead to an increase in the funding allocated to conservation. To conserve heritage buildings, the departments are forced to use their operating funds, as they do for all the other non-designated buildings. If heritage buildings are not used operationally, under Treasury Board Policy, the departments are not obliged to invest to maintain them.
