I personally think that more research is needed in the area of microplastics in general, and nanoplastics. Where do they come from? How do they end up in the environment? What are the sources? What are the links? What are the impacts, and things like that?

I think that's another field of research that is important to explore further.

Richard Cannings NDP South Okanagan—West Kootenay, BC

Okay.

President and Chief Executive Officer, Réseau Environnement

Mathieu Laneuville

We have to remember that it's also contaminating the rest of the waste. That's not good for the rest.

Richard Cannings NDP South Okanagan—West Kootenay, BC

If I have a few seconds left, I'll go back to Mr. Merante and ask about soft plastics.

I end up bringing back a lot of plastics in my suitcase to B.C. when I go home every weekend, just because I can recycle it there. Is there an issue as to why it doesn't happen here in Ontario?

The Chair Liberal Valerie Bradford

Please be quick. We are over time.

5:40 p.m.

Senior Plastics Campaigner, Oceana Canada

Anthony Merante

Simply, I think we need to take a good, hard look at what is necessary and unnecessary and what could be replaced by durable circular materials. Often these things will just be turned into garbage.

Richard Cannings NDP South Okanagan—West Kootenay, BC

Yes.

Thanks.

The Chair Liberal Valerie Bradford

Thank you very much.

To our witnesses Anthony Merante, Mathieu Laneuville and Céline Vaneeckhaute, thank you for your testimony and participation in the committee's study of innovation, science and research in recycling plastics. If you have anything additional you'd like to submit to the clerk, we always welcome that.

Before we adjourn today's meeting, the committee will need to set a deadline for the submission of witnesses for the upcoming study of the new capstone research funding organization announced in budget 2024. The suggested date for that would be Friday, September 27, at 5 p.m.

Is that the will of the committee? Does that seem reasonable?

5:40 p.m.

Conservative

Robert Gordon Kitchen Conservative Souris—Moose Mountain, SK

On a point of order, Madam Chair, can you just repeat the date, please?

The Chair Liberal Valerie Bradford

Yes. It would be Friday, September 27.

Does that seem okay?

Some hon. members

Agreed.

The Chair Liberal Valerie Bradford

That's great. The clerk will circulate the usual request for witnesses by email. That's for our next upcoming study.

Is it the will of the committee to adjourn the meeting?

Some hon. members

Agreed.

The Chair Liberal Valerie Bradford

We seem excited for that. Thank you.

Thank you again to the witnesses.

The meeting is adjourned.
