Mr. Speaker, I am really pleased to be able to participate virtually and ask a question of my old friend from Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong.
Bill S-3, of course, came to us through the Senate. It was already passed there, and it was tabled for first reading seven months ago. Like her, I have read the bill. I read every bill. I think every MP has an obligation to read every piece of legislation before they vote on it.
In any case, my question on Bill S-3 deals with weights and measures. I do not have any problem with what is in the bill; but I am wondering if this was not a missed opportunity.
While we talk about food security and the price of food, we know that we are experiencing shrinkflation. It is not entirely a new thing. Do members remember the old jokes about the country store, where the thumb was on the scale just a bit when they measured out how much hamburger one was buying or how much cheese?
I am wondering, since the bill very specifically relates to a couple of pieces of legislation, as the member has mentioned, has there been any thought on the government side of the House to expanding the bill we got from the Senate to include inspection and verification of what the oligarchy of grocery chains does in telling us how much food we are buying and at what price?
