Madam Speaker, I am pleased to have the opportunity to present a petition today on behalf of residents of Regina and southern Saskatchewan who are concerned about rising incidents of home invasions and the risks they pose to the residents of those properties. They also point to incidents of homeowners being criminally charged after defending themselves and their families from criminals who had broken into their homes.
Signers of the petition are calling on Parliament to enact stand-on-guard legislation to guarantee Canadians the right to defend themselves, their families and their property in their own homes. They argue that such a law would make robbers, burglars and home invaders think twice before committing their crimes.
