Mr. Speaker, the petition is regarding the Korean War armistice of 1953.
As we are all aware, one of the proudest moments in our current history was when Canada contributed to the Republic of Korea during the Korean War. In fact, we were the third-largest contributor to that effort. Over 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War, and of course, 516 gave their lives. As a result of that, and given the flourishing relationship between the Republic of Korea and Canada, and the sizable community of Korean Canadians from coast to coast to coast, petitioners are presenting this petition. It is about how the absence of a peace agreement will certainly fuel military tension and humanitarian suffering in the Korean region.
Petitioners have requested that we publicly support international efforts to negotiate a formal peace agreement replacing the 1953 armistice. They are requesting that we work with allies, including the Republic of Korea, to advance multilateral diplomacy toward durable peace and stability on the Korean peninsula. They also ask for the tabling in Parliament of a report outlining our strategy for a permanent peace settlement. Finally, they ask that we demonstrate global leadership by advocating in international forums for peaceful conflict resolution and a formal peace settlement on the Korean peninsula.
