Mr. Speaker, my hon. friend from Foothills mentioned that the east-west pipeline was cancelled, but part of the problem there relates to this debate today, which is the ability of Canadian refineries to process bitumen. None of the refineries in Atlantic Canada could have done that. The Irving Oil refinery in Saint John had no plans then, nor does it have plans now, to add an upgrader.
On our capacity to process Canadian raw resources here, would the member not agree with me that there is no point in shipping diluted bitumen to the east coast of Canada only to put it in tankers to go to the United States?
